*fuck the government
fixd it for you
I would also point out that they simply handed over 20 billion in cash to the government - without any investigation findings or anything. It was technically their oil flowing in to the ocean despite it being the fault of transocean and Halliburton too (both had failings). Thousands of wells get drilled every year uneventfully... just like thousands of planes take off every year and land safely - but it doesn't mean accidents never happen...
But - of that 20 billion handed over to the government, for them to "manage" - how much has really been distributed to the people that supposedly need it? Bp were smart here - because the government will inevitably fuck up the distribution of those funds, and no doubt some shady shit will come out of the woodwork as to where some of those funds have gone.
All in all - you cannot say Bp didn't do the best they could at cleaning that shit up and dedicating unbelievable resources to restoring the coastline and the businesses that rely on it. Unfortunately, most people in that part of the world rely on the oil industry in the GoM for a living - so now, the government are not operating with the same dedication and commitment to those people and getting production back up and running.
I can't see Exxon or Chevron doing things any better.... in fact, if valdez is anything to go by, shit would still be fucked up now.... Bp still has a massive fine heading it's way though, but - it will pay that and move on.
You'd be amazed at the regulatory changes and improvements to safety that have been made in the last 12 months directly from lessons learnt from Macondo... Bp also, as an organization has been, and still is going through a total restructuring to make sure that never happens again...
