i read two sentences and it says that people aren't choosing a certain religious affiliation. that doesn't believe the people don't believe it, they just don't want to be a certain denomination

As long as there are weak people who NEED to believe there is more to life then this, and whom don't want to take TOTAL responsibility for their own lives....  (I think that's just being greedy personally - as a lifetime is a pretty cool thing to start with.... )

does this article have any idea how many people practice a religion? that would be millions of people deciding to just not believe what they are believing in. im personally indifferent about religion, but this seems a bit strange to me

It's a fact that atheism has gained incredible popularity as people realize we don't need religion to live a life of virtue. I'm an atheist but always wondered, since we evolve and adapt then how is it we haven't evolved out of a need for religion, unless it were necessary. I'm of the impression that it's just a psychological need and religion fits oh so well. Simple enough. Has anyone else Read or heard anything similar as far as the evolution religion is concerned. Looking for a legitimate discussion here not an argument.

We are evolving to not need religion. The amount of non-believers goes up every year. Many countries in Europe are predominantly atheistic. Think back a few hundred years and those places would have been like America is now (lolamerica).

I think the progression of science is inversely correlated with the number of religous people. Although as long as there are things that we don't know, there will always be people who fill in the gaps with some sort of religion or supernatural explanation.

religon is an awesome thing. It gives society as a whole moral and ethical guidlines to live by that make the world around us a better place. Religon, especially the catholic church, has helped soooooo many poor people over the years. I mean really, if you go to any 3rd world country 99% of the people that are there doing charitable work will be associated with a church group from one religon or another. Overall i think that Religon is one of the best things that has happened to humanity.

there is a saying in customer service that someone will tell 1 person about a good experience at your store, but will tell 10 about a bad experience. this is what has happened to religon. there are hardly any bad things that are caused by religon, when compared to the countless good things, but the good things dont provide a good story, so it doesnt get told.


I grew up Lutheran(Catholic light) and eventually became a devote athiest. However, if i have kids, i plan to raise them in a Lutheran church, because i believe that it helps to instill a set of virtues and morals, and because it gives them a community and faith to fall back on in times of personal trouble. I think that everyone whould be raised in a loving religon, and when they learn enough about the world, they should be free to make up their own mind regarding spirituality.

Thats how my parents treat religion, they know God isn't real and they believe in science. They do however attend church when possible, and choose to live by the moral rules created by the bible.

My parents brought me to church almost every sunday for the first 13 years of my life. Then I chose not to be confirmed due to situations in my life that had lead me not to believe in a higher power like God. People ask me why I don't believe in a higher power.. I don't know, I just don't feel like there's anything along the lines of a god I guess. I do believe in morals though, and thats the difference between you and me. I don't need a silly book to tell me whats right and wrong. Its pretty easy to decipher the right decision in a situation. I know not to kill, rape, or fuck my neighbors smoking hot wife. Not because the bible says so, but because I know I don't want any of those things happening to me.

I'm not going to say people can't believe in what they want to, but I will say that religion is a false security that way too many people look to seriously when in a problem.

Good point. I guess the science example is becoming less and less relevant. Perhaps a few hundred years ago the progress of science (evolution/greater understanding of the cosmos etc.) played a larger role in reducing the numbers of religious people. Then again, while its probably the case that people don't look to religious texts for answers on where the sun goes, I do think that many people do turn to religion for answers about what happens after death/how the universe started etc. Maybe they know deep down that its probably bullshit, but people definitely get some comfort from it.

I guess i am being rather vague when i say "religous." I am referring to people who believe in a supernatural diety of some sort, and believe that said deity has created the universe and is concerned with anything that goes on within our universe.
Obviously some people can believe in a god of some sort, but not believe in jesus dying for their sins/going to church every sunday/prayer etc, but i'm not really referring to these people.





Did i suggest that there is a problem with your views on how to live life?

The Crusades, holocaust, genocides all over the world? All because of religion.
Religion has, and in many cases still does, promote racism, sexism, classism and homophobia. The catholic church is telling people in Africa that condoms are evil, all whilst millions of people are dying of aids every day. wow folks are pretty ignorant of how much the catholic church, and other churches, help people around the world. Aside from the crusades, what MAJOR atrocities and wars were caused by religon?

Almost all genocides are caused by ethnic fighting that has been going on since those ethnicities were tribes hunting with spears.

The current muslim extremist fad is really a small blip in terms of human life lost.

why does no one ever think of charity work that religon does? seriously, take a look at latin america, africa, or southeast asia, and you will see sooo many missionaries helping people.

I think some people are incorrectly attributing positive activities and thinking to 'the word of god' rather than to what is basically just a tight knit community. Behind the books and bibles you have a caring community, and thats the result giver.

they are fighting over land, because us americans, straight jacked the palestinians land, and gave it to the jews.

And now, because Israel is best buds with the US, they wreck shit in the mid east, when in fact they have no real buisness having a state there.


And people do good things without religon, true. but think of religon as an institution that oraganizes and facilitates those charitable efforts. You dont need the red cross, or 2nd harvest food bank to contribute to charity, but they make contributing a helluva lot easier.

People like to focus on the black sheep of religon family, instead of focusing on the other 95% of the family doing nothing but great things for humanity.

hey chief, most of those^^^ are caused by regional tensions, not by religon. almost all of those wars were fought over territory, and religon was NOT the cause.




Almost all were based on ethnic tensions, political tension, and territorial tensions. Very few wars are started because "another country, or group of people has the wrong religon and so we should kill them" Most of those mentioned, started because of long standing ethnic tensions, and territorial disputes.


If there were no religon there would still be differences of opinion in how to rule a country, and who should be the ruling class etc. Correlation is not causation.

the things that were caused by religion were the crusades, and jihads. The rest, not so much.

ignorant statement is ignorant.

Religon has helped FAR FAR more people than it has killed, anyone with any worldly experience, or even historical knowledge knows this. not saying that religon hasnt killed many people, but the amount of people that religon has helped is overwhelmingly larger than the people it has hurt.

Second, Before there was organized religon there were tribes trying to kill the other tribe because of territorial disputes. As well there has always been fighting to rule a group of people, that is nothing new.

Genocide has been around forever. One ethnic group thinks its blood lines are the best and so they try to kill off another ethnic group.

Religon is not the root of evil, or of good. It is simply a way to facilitate either. just like a gun is not inherently good or evil, but it can kill other people(evil) or it can bring you much needed sustenance by killing a deer(good). It is when evil people are introduced into the mix is when things start going south.
