Photo of the season contest

While we're at it why don't we shoot for the most contests ever live on the site?

This one will be sweet. We want a new photo for the cover and id bet my nuts you guys have lots of awesome ones.

Lets crown the best photo of the season. Winner goes on the cover of NS, gets a shirt stickers and whatever else we can drum up at the office.

Bracket style again, but this one is going to be faster. Uploading until the 24th, then a short few days of voting.

Brackets will be one day to upload and one day to vote.

The big question is... put your best photo in at the beginning or play the strategy of getting seeded lower in the contest?

Sooooo, uh now that voting is open.... how the hell do we vote? i cannot for the life of me figure it out, unless the contestants can't vote and its left up to the outside NS members?

Yeah we're experimenting with not letting contestants vote in the contests. We had so much cheat voting happening in the old contest system, we took extreme measures to beat it this time.

We are keeping the anti-cheating tactics so secret if we even told anyone on staff we'd have to kill them.

:)

So go, share on facebook/NS and get others to go in there and vote!

Word to the wise, this is a photo contest, not a sympathy contest. Sorry to hear that a number of you have blown your knee and have, or will have surgery in the coming week, but its not going to change my opinion about your photo.

RIDERS - be clear with your photographers because they can do whatever they want with your photos, and you have no rights. You absolutely do not have the right to post a photo because you are in it."

I definitely just gave my own photo a 1 because the rider didn't ask for permission to post it.

that's not a word for the wise, it's far from it. that's just you trying to bias votes because you don't want to lose votes to sympathy. People can vote how ever they want man, you have every right to try to try to influence people to vote for you, but being a douche at the same time doesn't help your cause...

I'm wasn't trying to be a douche, and if it came off that way, my apologies to both you and the offended/injured photographers.

My point that I was trying to make is that this is a photo contest; where the photo, and I'll add that this is my own opinion, should be judged on its own merits, not because the photog is injured (which is a bummer to hear).

But you do make an excellent point, ,"People can vote how ever they want man, you have every right to try to try to influence people to vote for you". I should've prefaced the original post with an "imho" or something to that effect.

By the way, I didn't "down-vote" Gharf & GSPhotography's submission, I actually enjoyed looking at those shots, they were actually in my top ten from the submissions.


Further more, I'm not in this contest but one of my photos was entered, without my permission to post it, which is why I quoted Bishop; riders need to make sure they get permission from the photographers before they enter a photograph, even if they're in the photo.

Most, if not all of these photographs, were not shot for commercial gain, ie selling or promoting a product; they would fall under editorial use, and therefore not typically require a release, i.e. permission, from the people appearing in the photo.

I remember the good old days when Doug would launch a contest and we'd all rejoice. Maybe an essay contest judged by Dan Brown would've been an easier contest to host. Why Dan Brown? Because god knows Schmuck isn't going to read 100 10 page essays :-)


Thankfully there are about 10 contests happening on NS.com and Powdermag.com.

Well, its definitely a real issue. That I completely understand... its very hard to make a living these days as a photographer / videographer. There's a whole new world out there with what the internet has done, and its up to people like us to figure it out!

So honestly I appreciate the conversation breaking out.

why is all of this really even an issue? youd think people would decided not to upload their money shot to  win a t-shirt on NS. just dont be a fucking retard, dealing with NS is dealing with good people, seems like the use of good judgement would be alot more beneficial then 13 pages of legal jargon, all for a t-shirt.
