idk. i get where you are coming but let me plead my case.

SAGE CATTABRIGA ALOSA
-was with the first crew to hit pyramid/chads. was the first to throw a double flip over i think pyramid. And is currently THE BEST BIG MOUNTAIN SKIER out there right now. that is all a given if you have seen his segments the past 3 years. routinely steps up to gnarlier lines than anyone else, and throws high speed 3's in the middle of AK spine walls.

If he wanted he could kill it in park, just learned dub flats last year. Even tanner called him the best skier on earth when he went on a TG trip with him, seth, dana, and Mcintosh.

Tanner without a doubt, he's literally been pushing it since the fucking beginning of freeskiing, and still kills it. he's claiming to come back to x games pipe next year and i don't doubt he'll be right up with these up and coming riders throwing crazy dub variations

I would say a three way tie for Glen Plake, Seth Morrison, and Shane McConkey.
this really depends on what aspect of the sport you are looking at, but to me, these are the top on my list

Shane was better at more of the elements of big mountain skiing than Candide.  I would say Candide is a better all-around skier, but I don't know if  that makes him a better skier, although he is very close.  Big mountain skiing is very important in my thinking.   Shane is probably the best billy goat skier ever, and Seth and Nobis are the only guys who can straightline like Shane.  Shane also has one of the most diverse competition backgrounds out there.

Henrich WIndstedt deserves mention.  He nearly made the Swedish mogul team, has competed in the x-games, and killed Ak in the last two MSP films.

Jonny Moseley deserves mention.  He was one of the dominant figures in an Olympic discipline, so much so that he completely changed the judging process.  He also did well in x-games contests, and was in incredible big mountain skier.  Watch his segment in the TGR filck The Realm, he destroys AK to the point where you could mistake him for Seth, Nobis, or Shane.  I don't think you can say that about most of the all-arounders today,  Moseley had a great argument for being the best in the world around 2000, I wish he had stayed in the industry.

Daron Rahlves deserves mention.  He was a dominant racer, and also a great big mountain skier.  That really takes great ability on skis.  I would put him above Body Miller and Herman Maier, as neither of those guys dominated AK the way Rahlves does.

I would also mention Seth Morrison as a candidate.

Candide is a good answer too.  I can't wait to see

Kent Kreitler was really great too.  He does not get enough credit.

The lines are a bit different though.  Candide killed it on the Bed De Ross, in Verbier, in questionable snow.  Tanner has done more huge AK stuff than Candide at this point.  I am not quite as impressed by the big lines in Candide Kamera as I am with the AK stuff Tanner has done.  I am more impressed with Candide's run on the Bec De Ross, and I just might rank that above Tanner's pringles run.  The two are very close for me.

With Candide doing a 2-year film project, hopefully we will see him in some giant AK lines.  I think he would really kill it.

I forgot to mention Sage.  He is probably the best skier ever in super gnarly AK spines.  His lines in Under The Influence were absurd.


If you want to see Candide's run on the Bec De Ross, go to this page.  His run got him a tie for third.  That face is super gnarly, and keep in mind the snow was not great.

This is awesome skiing.  Anyone who thinks Candide can only hit kickers is way off base.

you might be right, but in fairness, i think tanner has called like 5 different people "the best skier on earth". his flatspin in light the wick was mentally retarded, though.

He was ranked top 40 in the world in moguls at like 15 and barely gave it any effort.

X games golds - 2001 big air. Gold in 2002,2003,2004 slope. Gold in 2006, 2007, 2008 pipe. Gold in 2 of the 3 dew tour half pipe comps in 2009. Gold in 2002, 2003 Us Open slope. Gold 2005, 2006 Us Open pipe. 10 More silvers.

-Sick BC segments in him most recent video parts

I'd say he's a pretty well rounded skier, one of the few from the 98-2000 era to still kill it today. Check out like a lion. Amazing movie.

from what i heard it was actually really pretty good conditions-12+ inches on top of hardpack. a little dusty on crusty but pretty good by FWT standards.

nonetheless candide kills it, but i have never seen him step up to anything close to the AK lines that are slayed by the TGR and MSP crews. not saying he cant, but iwanna see wide open skiing on 55 degree spine walls with 50+ ft drops in there.

- tanner
- sage
- jon olsson
- henrik windstedt

... and i thought to add Morrison and Mosely to this list. but i reconsidered.

i think it would be fun to ask someone like Mike Douglas, JP Auclair or Scott Gaffney who they think the best skiers have been. they ski and work with most of the athletes, so i'd wanna know their take.

as for guys like Tom W. and Bobby B. - they will have to demonstrate how they ski outside of the park in the coming years if they want to be mentioned in the same breath as those who've been mentioned so far. sure, they have pushed park skiing to new levels in the last couple of years, but in my eyes the best skiers push multiple facets of skiing, and always dominate.

I'd just like to add that a few things.

A)wondering "who the best is" is pretty gay.

B)99% of people mentioned have only been relevant the last 10-15 years

C) there were tons of olympic gold medalists for like a century.....the only one mentioned in this regard is Bode


Keep in mind, there were aerialists doing bigger things than double corks several decades ago. Bergoust was doing quadruple corks in the 80's. Apparently throwing a grab in makes it infinitely more difficult....lol, yeah right. Credit to Sammy for doing it switch.

Also keep in mind there are dudes who have killed the freeskiing tour for years who never show up in movies.

This goes back to my first point A).

Most of the hype behind "who is best" is subjective at best in a very dynamic sport with so many different respects.

If you want to continue a gay debate that is usually simply opinionated by your limited exposure to ALL skiers, try and separate disciplines. Racing, moguls, pipe, park, big mountain (skiing not just hucking) ballet, x-country, etc etc.

Debating who the best is about the same as a bunch of dudes debating who they want to bone the most.....very gay.

this is a good post.

the only point i disagree on is the aerialist thing. its not the grab that makes it difficult, its the rotation pattern. dub cork is not the same as a 1080 double backflip. switch trip rodeo is not the same as switch triple frontflip 1260.

to your point: i think the debate cannot be 'best skier of all time'. it's best 'FREEskier of all time'. racing, moguls, ballet, x-country aren't of concern to most people on this site.

i think we can reach a conclusion on best skier between the 4 disciplines: big mountain, backcountry, park, and pipe. i mean, we may have to even include urban.

as a result, i still say candide.

i also think that eric hjorliefson(Sp?) does not get nearly enough credit.

forget tanner. everyone loves tanner. stop following the pack and find your own inspiration. not just what everyone less looks up to. but i would say hands down candide. or J.O. stepped up the game of jumps with JOI and JOSS really pushed the limits. but my favorite is for sure Shane Mcconkey. so just amazing at everything he did and he just was skiing to have fun. not im the best. oh and im better then you

It's an epic battle between THall and Candide for me. They can hit anything.

THall's evidence has been proven all over this thread. And I think he's making a big comeback. Especially for Olympics.

But anyone remember Candide in X=10? Fucking AMAZING. And he's always throwing huge hits.

and why not? hes one of the best park skiers and probably the best in terms of his style compared to tech.

he slays urban alot better than most of the tech skiers i.e russ

and who knows, in 4 years he may well start pow skiing as most pro skiers do as they get older
