Waterproof Material?

Hey NSG,

Question for you is this - does anyone know the name of any type of fabric/material that is slightly waterproof, but still light and breathable? +k

gortex may not be your best bet, but i think certain polyesters are waterproof

this. and if you want to start making you're own, start the first few with some cheap fleece. if you don't have much experience sewing (which i didn't when i started) then you may not be very satisfied with the finished product until you work out the kinks. gore-tex is expensive and there is a high chance you will mess up if you are a first time sewer.

Well, taking the sewing aspect out of it (as I am decent, but not the point), what would you reccomend? Isn't gore-tex a brand of outerwear?

gore-tex is a fabric brand

armada makes water resistant hoodies, they call the fleece, but it doesnt really feel like fleece maybe that will help in your search

it is not hoodie material. it's for technical coats. also, you can't just buy gore-tex. right off of the FAQ's on their site:

Where can I buy GORE-TEX® fabric?
GORE-TEX® fabric is available only to our licensed manufacturers, who create garments and footwear to our exacting standards.

you can see it's difficult to get a hold of. try to find sweatshirt fleece at your local jo-ann fabrics. they may not have many colors, or any fabric at all. if that's the case, anti-pill fleece is cheaper and will get the job done, plus my store has literally like 100's of colors. it's a bit thinner, and less "waterproof" as cotton blend fabrics go, but i find it comfier.

That is what I was trying to find out, thanks.

I don't need it to be super water proof, just enough so that if you take a spill on the mountain, the snow won't seep into the hoodie.

just use normal fleece then wash it with nikiwax stuff. Look it up on backcountry.com. it is wash in stuff that will help water bead off of it.

just get some of the no-pill fleece or whatever and treat it with a water repellent. it should work good for what you want
