Any help with Recreational camera?

I know you guys hate when people ask this, but I am looking for a camera and I'm wondering what to get. It would be used for recreation strictly, Im not tryin to go pro or anything. I want it to last for a long time and be durable. My price range is in the $300-$400 area so nothing too fancy.I am a beginner with all of this, but I wish to get into it.  Any and all suggestions and pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ns

you'll find your best bet is to buy used off kijiji, or craigslist.
Look for a Canon Rebel XTi, XSi. their great beginner cameras, and I highly recommend them.

even if you don't plan on "going pro" per say, its a nice durable camera, with good manual settings, and also leaves the option for different lens's, as wide angles and fisheyes are pretty popular.

i'm very happy with my nikon coolpix p100, it's basically a stepdown from a bigger/better/bulkiers SLR camera...
it's an easy to operate point and shoot camera with 1080p video, 26x zoom, backlit CMOS sensor, and all that is also possibly to controll manual, so definately leaves you room to grow into it and learn about photography ...
it's priced around 300 ...

it has an auto mode, full auto, 4manual modes, and a ton of scene modes, so if your auto mode doesn't do it, you can pick the corresponding scene and still shoot excellent photos for those conditions without having to know about shutter time, aperture and iso to control it manual ...
