The fact that it creates debate does not mean that it is appropriate for the medium of a ski magazine. Not that I am saying the two are equal, but an article where someone defends Al Qaeda would "create debate" as well, that doesn't make it proper subject matter. Something tells me that if someone wrote an article that said "and it was when I was cruising down the mountain that I first started to have this realization. It just hit me, there is no god. The conceptualization of a 'greater being' is merely a feeble, though misguided, attempt to grasp the overwhelming scale of the universe and accept the unknown.", then you wouldn't have printed it.
As, for the tangible effect that it has on the audience, it does not matter whether or not it "converts" anybody, merely that its existence serves to reinforce ideas ill-suited for skiing publication.
