Contour HD 1080 vs. GoPro hero 1080??

Well as far as video quality they're pretty even. Only thing with the contour is when you get going high speeds it's loud as a motherfucker.

I'd go for the Contour.

Video quality is about the same.
Audio tends to get maxed out on the Contour, but audio is pretty shitty on both.
IMO, GoPro's look pretty goofy. Higher potential of breaking off the mount? Contour is more streamline.
Both come with the same accessory mounts.
Get the profile mount over the goggle strap mount (if you're wearing a helmet). The goggle strap mount is pretty bouncy.

I'm very surprised you pick the contour over gopro considering those vids, they make the contour look like crap.

the contour is not as good as the hero HD.
it is close, but aside from picture quality the contour has far more short comings than the hero HD. Contour has far less mounting solutions, no waterproof case, and shitty mic and the goggle mount is floppy. Go pro has unlimited mounting options that are solid, easier to mount more places because of it's shape and the lens is better in the 720p60 mode.

for snow and wet applications there is really no beating the gopro, it is waterproof. the contour is vulnerable and susceptible to water damage at best.

Honestly man i think you have no idea what you are talking about and are giving this guy the wrong information. The gopro is so much more solid than the contour, and using both systems that is completely obvious to even the untrained eye. the Contour can only be mounted goggle side or on a helmet adhesive mount, but hero has adhesive helmet mounts, cheststrap mount, headstrap mount, suction cup mount, ski pole mounts, tripod mount, the list goes on and on. The hero is in a shockproof and waterproof case. Contour is open for damage. Picture quality is only one piece of a big puzzle. I am guessing you don't have any real time logged using the hero, try not to give advice about things you are not an expert on.

Two different handlebar mounts
Waterproof case with a "wake mount"
Flat surface mount (top adhesive, granted it is more bulky)
Window mount (suction mount)
Universal mount adapter (tripod mount)

Take a GoPro out of the case, it it no longer waterproof.
Then again, the Contour waterproof case is $40.
Watching the videos again, GoPro's quality is a bit sharper than Contour around the edges. GoPro colors have a bit more contrast, but a simple color correction on the Contour would bring them back to par.

I guess I'm more biased towards the Contour because of the streamlining. The GoPro looks more susceptible to physically getting knocked off the helmet.

in my experience the gopro is the gnar.
it comes with the case, no extra 40 bones.
I ride moto/enduro and we ride on some tight trails with gnarly tree branches etc. my go pro has taken a beating and always keeps steady mobbing, peep the video i posed above i hit a boulder head on directly with the camera and all it did was move the camera a little out of alignment. it is tough as nails. the countour on the the goggle or side of the helmet is uneven weight distribution and just feels weird. i think you would like the hero MUCH more.

From what i've seen, there are wayyy more edits made with a GoPro versus contour, which goes a long way in showing what people prefer. if you have seen what abek has done with the USC ski team, it just conveys how versatile the GoPro is. The contour is a convenient helmet mount design, but if you want to use it for other shots it doesn't have the flexibility. With the GoPro you can get mounts for all sorts of things, and for skiing the chest harness is pretty cool. My friend is taking a film class in college, he doesn't even ski, and the professors pointed out the GoPro as a legitamate supplement to the $2000+ dollar Canons they are using. He is actually making a short film involving a swat team, secret agents and the whole shebang. Lol he got pretty realistic M16s, pistols with lasers/silencers (+fog machine to make the lasers stand out). The GoPro is going to provide a first person shooter kind of look for some of the shots.

Honestly it would be dope to have either, but the GoPro has the edge in versatility.

I hardly even considered the Contour when I bought my helmet cam. The GoPro has a wider lense, many more ways to mount, picture mode, and a waterproof, (bombproof?) protective case. Who cares how it looks on your head, most of the time I just use it as a normal cam anyway.

GoPro: battery warmer. Full day of filming at 10 degrees with one battery.

Contour HD: No battery warmer, on average, at 10 degrees, you need about 5 battery packs for a full day.


Since you are probably using a helmet cam for skiing, this is the only real difference you should care about, the rest is mostly superficial.
