Its not necessarily about how good you are 100% of the time. There are plenty of GOOD/AMAZING riders out there who aren't sponsored. Its more about what YOU can do for the company in return, since a sponsorship is a working relationship. Even from being at a small hill/resort if you're in the media lots you offer some return value. Are you shooting with any photographers? Or doing any webzine blogging, updating? Do you compete at all? Or do gear reviews/feedback? What can YOU offer the company in return, since "I'm rad, sponsor me" doesn't really work anymore, especially in a tight economy.
In essence the company needs to see a greater monetary return from you than the money invested. IE: You recieve 500$ cost skis/bindings, therefore you should hopefully sell 5-10+ pairs of skis to other customers. (To make up the profit margin) Or snag photos in local hill advertisements or in magazine publications that would have otherwise cost the company the same dollar value in add cost if they had bought the space themselves.
Just some thoughts..
