Do you wear a helmet when you ride?

We were having this discussion at the office today, and I'm wondering what the general populace of newschoolers says.

I remember back in like 2001-2004 or so, what I would consider the "heydey" of my skiing ability... very few people wore helmets when they were riding. I mean even guys like Tanner and Candide would wear hats when competing in the x-games.

Hell... I never wore a helmet unless someone forced me. I don't even think I had a good reason. When I ask myself why, really it all came down to fashion and comfort. Didn't like the feeling or look of helmets.

However, more and more these days I see helmets almost everywhere. Of course part of that is because here in Quebec, wearing a helmet in the terrain park is mandatory. I know its the same in some places in Ontario, and at Whistler... but how many other parks are like that?

So I pose the question to you - do you ride with a helmet? What fuels your decision either way?

In the 6th grade I was doing a box that dropped onto another box, while I was on it i was spinning so when I came off I tried to 180 out (snowboarding) and I got caught at a 90, caught my edge and smashed back and slammed my head harrrd. Since then I don't feel very comfortable riding without one, unless its an opening day where my mountain doesnt have shit set up or if there is a lot of fresh pow so yeh, thats my story.

while i have always wanted to wear a russian ushanka with a communist logo skiing, i have resisted because i want to protect my brain.
There was that actress, natasha richardson, who died while skiing a bunny slope, because she wasnt wearing a helmet when she fell on the side of her head. Shit happens, and you have to be ready for it.

yeah, but it is better to not have the head trauma in the first place. i guess its personal preference, but i just feel safer on the slopes with a helmet.

i should but dont find myself wearing one most of the time my smith holt doesnt fit my head right and dont have the money to get a new helmet

In the past I never did, but since I started shredding pow more and got totally addicted I find myself in more serious terrain than in the past, hiking and skinning to get to the goods.. I've seen bad things happen and I want to shred pow for the rest of my life.. So I got myself a nice helmet after fitting a lot of them and really its fine, not to hot or heavy or whatever.. Just protected and save..

Always, and I'm happy I do. I tend to fall a lot and I usually hit my head at least once per year. Yesterday I took a wicked digger when I hit the knuckle of a 50ish ft table and landed right on my dome. I cracked my helmet in 3 places, and walked away with a very slight concussion. There's no doubt in my mind that if I wasn't wearing my helmet, I could easily be in a coma right now. I don't understand why more people don't wear them. I can understand how people may not have wanted to wear helmets 5+ years ago it looked like you were wearing an egg on your head, but now helmets are pretty stylish. $100 is a lot cheaper than any medical bills you would have to pay after a trip to the ER, from not wearing a helmet. WEAR ONE, THEY SAVE LIVES!!!!

I wear one in the park. Other than that I just tell myself I don't need it. But I know I do.

I used to when I was a little kid skier who barely went skiing once a year, but now I wear one all the time. Actually just bought a new one cause I cracked the foam in my old one last week. Thing probably saved my life.

Helmet all the time. Every time. All it takes is one time of not wearing a helmet to end your hobby/career/life. Not saying it is the end all/be all of protection, but it is a huge one.

i were one for everything..skating..skiing..biking..because of something that happen to me over the summer. I was skateboarding with two friends. Nothing serious just crusing aroung, not bombing any giant hills or anything. We get to a small size hill and i was going down with out a helmet on and got speed wobbles. Flew off the board and hit my head hard. My friends went to check on me, because i was laying on the ground and having a sesure. They called 911 and the police and ambulance arrived shortly. At the hospital they found out my skull had been hit hard enough where blood was filling up inside my head. They cut my head open and drained the blood out of my head. Spent a week in the hospital and could not do any physical activity for a month and some things not for two months. I was pretty lucky, it could have been alot worst. In the hospital i could not do any kind of simple math and my friends and family thought i was going to have long term mental problems. Fortunatly i do not, and am recovered completely. So even if you say to urself well i dont need a helmet im not doing anything crazy put one on anyway because anything can happen.

Of course it is. Way too many people have died or have permanent brain damage from not wearing a helmet.

I think i've already replied to this thread, but I had a pretty nasty crash the other day, not wearing a helmet, smacked my head hard (first time in 3 years of park skiing and 11 years of skateboarding). Turned out to only be a concussion, but it freaked me out. Helmet err'day from now on.

hated wearing them at first, but then i heard a story from a guy i know about a snowboarder without a helmet landing on his head and having seziures and dying at the bottom of a jump... thats why i wear one.

My helmet has a diecut that says "University of Common Sense" but even i have to skip school on incredibly warm hiking days.

always every day, unless im doing small shit in my backyard, othertimes i dont wear one was spring skiing when it was 80 deg out just too hot and it feels awesome to have the wind going thru ur hair for once feels sooo refreshing
