my car is quickly becoming a POS its a 2000 chevy Malibu with 145k on it. a little background so far ive had the tranny already replaced along with some fuel regulator thinger.
today on the freeway she died, completely dead. no power steering, absolutely dead. after letting her sit on the off ramp for 10-15ish minutes i cranked on her and she started. i then proceeded to drive the 15 miles home and it ran ok (taking the slow backroads)
does anyone have ANY idea what could be wrong with her? (before i bring it to the mechanics)
thanks for any help, NS rocks!
Thanks!
Justin

what do you mean died? if the car shuts off no shit you dont have power stearing. did you still have electric though? dash lights and shit? since you just got your full system worked on and after you let it sit for a while it started up again i would say somethings up with the regulator.

Its really hard to tell with such a vague description of what happened. Would the car turn over while it was on the side of the road? When you hit your key to the on position without cranking the engine can you hear your fuel pump in the rear of the car working? If it sounds like a creeking door opening you may have a fuel pump issue. What I would do is try to establish if you have all the 3 vital parts for an engine to run... that being fuel/ spark/ air. If you can eliminate 2 of those, it normally will point you into the right direction. Its very difficult to test fuel issues without a costant problem to test, if its a problem that occurs only once in a blue moon... dont bother bring it in to the mechanics as they will charge you for basically doing nothing. You have to be able to reproduce the complaint before you can really diag a fuel related issue. You can do basic tests for testing all of these things with a basic multimeter that can read in DC voltage. The only other possible route could be getting a pressure gauge run into your feed lines of fuel, which is fairly simple to do if you have the tool. In european cars, the fuel feed lines are label white for feed/ blue for return/ and green for evap. Try to make a mental note of all the lights on in the dash the next time it happens and what the specific driving conditions were ( been driving the car for over 10km, how many rpm the engine was at, speed of engine, any sort of odd behaviour before issue). I am a mechanic for Volkswagen, so some of this stuff may not apply to your chev, but most likely it can give you some guidelines to start trying to trouble shoot a bit for yourself.

easy there killer ;) lol
my car shit a brick going 65-70mph on a freeway power steering was kinda important. lollololol
tronned, thanks!
my dash lights worked, however when trying to restart the car (once i had come to a stop on the shoulder) the car would just turn over. (i dont know very much about cars but if it happens again ill do my best to listen for the fuel pump)
when it happend i was going aprox 65-70 and i wanna say 2-2.5k RPM. i felt what i thought to be a jump in RPMs and then the RPMs dropped off to 0 and the car was dead in the water. thankfully due to my high speed and no one being on the road i was able to coast a fairly good distance to the off ramp.
thanks guys!
im not taking it on the freeway tomorrow but ill give it a run on some roads less traveled and see what happens.

just play'n no worries haha
thanks for the insight
the ironic/ funny/ sad thing was is that all this went down not 1/2 mile from where my tranny shit a brick on me 2 years ago
i honestly thought it was that again cause it gave 2 of the same signs RPMs going up and then crashing. i let loose a flurry of obscenities and gave it some gas to see if i could make it rev like it did when the tranny gave out. thats when i realized i had no power at all except the lights.
thanks NS you guys are the best!
