JTFC my dad is an asshole

short story time.

upon graduating HS i entered community college, probably the right thing, i didnt know exactly what i wanted to do, and CC was a good option for me. at the time my mom would have liked to pay for all of my college (what her family did) my dad said "youre on your own for everything" (what his family did) so they met in the middle and they have been paying half my tuition and ive been paying the rest, (books etc).....or so i thought.

fastforward to today, i am one semester away from being doneski with CC (im psyched) ive been accepted into Westminster out in Utah, they made me an offer i cannot refuse, they are gonna cut my tuition nearly in half) still leaving me with a rather large amount of money to pay.

so today i find out my dad has been taking money out of my college fund that was set up when i was a wee little lad to pay for "his half" of my community college.

so basically ive got nothing.

if my 8 year old sister hadent been standing there i probably would have called him an asshole to his face.

It's his perogative. Certainly you COULD call him an asshole for taken what was (seemingly) your money, but how else do college funds work? It's your parents' money and they use it to pay for college. The end. You're not using your college fund are you? Right.

Oh and asshole things my dad has done? Forced us to move every 3 years since we were 5 years old (20 now). And then refuses to pay for college after kicking me to the streets.

no it was the money he and my mom set aside to pay for my college. IE it was their gift to me.

and we had talked about not tapping into that money until i was out of CC..

because him paying half of CC was supposed to come out of his pocket. but apparently he decided not to.


its more that im just finding this out now, when im trying to figure out how to pay for a college where tuition is 5 times what im paying at CC. basically he went behind my back, and took the money that was supposed to be saved for later.

making him an asshole.

i understand that it would be stupid simple to go find someone whos dad left, their mom is a crackwhore, etc.

theyve got bigger problems than me no doubt.

im kinda in the same boat im 17 about to be a senior in HS and i recently found out my dad stole 8 grand of mine out of a college fund my grandma left for me when she died, he bought a boat and a ton of blow. mad shitty. but my step-dad owns a restaurant so i'm making my money back i guess..

I think you're acting a tad entitled to money that's not even yours. I don't mean to get you angry or troll or anything, but it isn't your money. They set up a college fund to pay for college. Your dad is using it for that. It's not a big deal. Were you paying for school with it, too? Because then that's a little dick on your part. Your parents saved that money for what, 13-15 years to help pay for you, and now they're using it. Don't get upset.

about 3 years ago me and my dad got into a fight yelling at each other, i turned away to walk out the door, he took me by the back and choked me and i started punching him, then he threw me from my neck and i bruised my ribs off the kitchen table,

then 2 years ago my dad told me and my sister he was going to take a break from my mom and his marriage and move out for a little whil eover summer and in the meantime they would do marriage consuling, he never showed up for counsuling, never came back into the house, and over the summer when i was visiting him i saw pictures of him and a girl kissing and hugging and shit marked march 07, a year before he said him and mom would work on marriage, my mom had no clue of any of this,

then pretty much through my whole life my dad has been traveling for work, only really home on weekends every other week, i never really saw him much or talked much too him, and when he was home hed just sleep and watch tv and do homw work on the computer, and he always had trips were he would be gone for almost 2 months straight either going to kansas or denmark (yea denmark)

never had a good bond with him till just recently this year, he lost his job so hes home all the time and he found out a i drink and smoke alot, he lives down by seaside in jersey now though, which is a good and bad thing, now when i go down, we drink togather, check out chicks at the beach, do alot of shit now, so it all works out in the end i guess

yea this thread just got real

its more that he went behind my back, its not so much about the money(it kinda is in the end) its that we had both agreed on a set of terms and he broke them. i am now find out about it after the money has been spent.

if he had come to me and said they needed to use that money because he of whatever reason that would have been a different story.

If he took it out of his savings account, would you still be pissed? It's the same deal. HE, not you, had money saved away for this. You both agreed to pay tuition, and he did - using money HE saved.

i think what hes trying to say is the money was supposed to be there for him for westminster- not for his dad to pay for cc- his mom is paying out of pocket- and his dad is taking the money that op was going to use for westminster to pay for cc- it is a total dick move - Im in the same boat- my parents pay for half of my schooling- albeit I dont have any hangups with them-

That sucks man.

Also, I really disagree with this mantra that kids should pay for their own college. It's a cyclical thing, parents pay for their kids, then their kids pay for their kids, etc, so everyone ends up paying for college at some point. It's better that it's the parents, who have an income stream and savings, than the student, who enters working life saddled with debt.

I'd have six-figure debt right, had my parents not helped me out, and would be unable to get credit, a mortgage etc

That's stupid man, I have a similar asshole father situation that's been going on for a while.

Wouldn't come out for my grad but will go to Scotland for two weeks for some conference.

The saying he doesn't have money is annoying too, when the two of them (step mom+dad) make over half a million a year...

well shit man sorry to hear, i know everyones saying it wasnt youre money blah blah blah, but it was money your dad put aside in a fund, that probably matured alot, specifically for college tuition and i know id being fucking irate if that happened it me so i hope you get it figured out cause getting tuition for half price is baller and not a deal to pass up

take out FEDERAL student loans, enough to pay most of your way.

Join the NG - they pay off all federal student loans
go to Basic + IAT next summer - come back with G.I. Bill.

you will probably get one deployment over a 6 year enlistment in the Guard.

And learn to play the Stock Market. The way one of my friends (who took 4 years out of state at the U of U) payed off his debts was by taking out $5000 in student loans, buying stock in high-yield companies like Apple right before they released a new product with $2500, then putting himself on a no-interest payment plan for tuition while he played the market. He easily earned a $3500 profit playing the market right, which really anyone can do if they're smart about it. You'll pay off your loans in no time, and you'll earn a ton of money with minimal interest on the loan.

I'm in a similar situation. I decided to take a few years off before going to college to get an idea of what I wanted to do. My grandparents had given me a few grand when I was younger for college. I had thought my dad put the money in a savings account but he won't let me have access to it. I'm 99% sure he just spent it. My parents have been separated my whole life so I've always split time between them but this past year I finally had enough of my dad and moved completely out. A few months ago he informs me since I'm not going to school I can pay for my own health insurance. Fucking genius that he is doesn't even take into account my pre-existing health problems which means I will probably never have health insurance again. Good luck to you man.

do not do gamble with money that you're not willing to loose. yes, he's a student and has a long earning period of life ahead of him to make it up, but as an already strapped for cash student, playing the market is a BAD idea.

I have nothing to complain about. My dad is the shit. But my friend's friend's mom, who's kind of white trash/stupid is such a bitch to him it's ridiculous. At one point he had a few thousand dollars saved up for a car and for college. One day he came home and she had a new laptop and a big screen TV in her room. Turns out she took all of his money that he had saved up and bought a bunch of shit.

Oh and just to give you the full idea, you know those nigerian prince email scheme things? She almost fell for one of those. It was like, she would transfer $3,000 to some person and they would give her back $30,000 once they came to the U.S. or whatever. She was about to send an email back with all of their info but he caught her doing it before she could send it.
