GoPro cable cam

I wrote up a big thing about it, but it got deleted, so the short version


I've been playing around with the idea of a cable cam for my go pro
i had my friend weld up a frame, and strung up some cable

I didn't think i needed a tensioning system, but i think that might have led to some of the bouncyness seen in the video.
I think in the future i will try and use my slackline to tighten the cable

I am going on a big weeklong kayak trip tomorrow where i will get this setup dialed in i hope, but i'm pretty happy with this, being my very first test
I'll post up more when i get home


I'll put the test video up when vimeo finishes converting it

Add some weight to the bottom of it to balance it out and remove the bounciness.

here is the video, these were the very first tries, and i didn't get to do more, or tweak it because it started raining really hard

definitely wanna have it facing sideways and not down the cable. Ad some weights and get a ratchet to tighten the cable and you will be all set. I've seen people hook up a fishing line and reel to the frame so they can reel it back to them and reset it, if you ever consider that.

yea, i just kind of threw it up, but you are right
I'm going to add weight and tension it when i set it up for kayaking
i'm also working on a fishing line or something similar

throwin weights on doesnt help as much as you would think.  If you just through a bunch on the bottom it makes it swing like a pendulm if you arnt perfectly steady at the start.  id get a tie down strap for a truck (the ones that rachet) so you can really pull it tight that will help a ton.  We used the fishing line on ours, makes it so once you get good you can control speed and bring it back to you really easy (if your using it for kyacking this will probably be key)  It looks good though some minor adjustments here and there and it should be perfect

Skip Forward to 2:03 is our cable cam design. Defiantly get the cable as tight as possible and it takes out allot of bounce. Make sure when you release the camera its not rocking back and forth. We use a Bait Cast Fishing reel to control speed and retract the camera. You must use a bait cast in order to control the speed.

here is the edit i made from my trip it has one shot with the cable cam moving, and a few i put the cable across the river and put the camera in the middle

with the moving one, i am pretty happy with the results, i didn't get the speed completely dialed because hitting that waterfall was kind of a last minute deal so we didn't have much time
and i wish i got to set it up in some different spots on the river where i took the static cable shots, but it was really hard to get up/down going across the river, so it stayed there

looks cool, still not quite as smooth as it should be, and cut your shots earlier so you don't see the camera shake and bounce around when it gets to the end of the line.
