They play a 4-5-1. I'm pretty familiar with the formation. I used to play in it.

They attack when they send their wings into the zone and swing the ball into the box. Play Bocanegra, and Gooch, in there, and make sure to to head those balls away. Then, if they try to enter it straight on, just close up the lanes and give them no room to work from.

Our defense has stepped it up a heck of a lot better from the first 20 minutes of the opening game against England. I feel that now that the communication is there, and everyone's more on top of things, we could surely pull it out.

Plus, Ghana almost shouldn't be here... least not from normal goals scored. They beat Serbia on a handball  that lead to a penalty kick. Then they drew with Australia because of a handball that lead to a penalty kick. They have yet to score a goal by actually scoring a goal.

Lets just not get a handball given penalty kick, or any penalty for that matter, and we should be okay.

Dude seriously, if we play on our A game, we can win this thing. Thats the thing I like about soccer is that a team can be known as a powerhorse (i.e. Brazil) but a good team can come in and just out play them if they play smart. We need to not lose the ball so much (looking at Altidore) and Dempsey needs to put in every close chance he gets and stop the bullshit balls way over the Goal. Hell Altidore needs to shoot more too, he seems to keep it low. Fuck the USA would go crazy if we keep going, we could honestly win the whole thing, there is a chance. this is def the year to do it.

I feel i touched a nerve there....

Reading all the USA posts on here you guys seem to be a bit cocky.. Yes Ghana hasn't scored a goal while playing 5 on 5 but they are still a good team. The US has one of the worst defences (excluding goalie) left, and i fell Gyan can penetrate it.

England has a much tougher draw then the US, but hell you gotta beat the best to be the best.
They played much better vs. Slovenia and deserved more then a 1-0 victory imo.

England is just warming up, while i feel USA is gonna cool down.

I'm an English fan and your an American fan, obviously we have our differences of opinion, lets just the game this weekend do the talking.

This just reminds me of the Olympics all over again. The US beat us(Canada) in the group stage and was so arrogant, and then we dethroned them.

i feel the same thing happening only it will be Ghana or Uruguay knocking them off their high horse.

One thing i will you is that they plade with pride and passion, but that can only win you so many games.

Best of luck to you in your side of the bracket but don't get your hopes too high

i agree that Green is awful, one of the worst goaltending gaffes ever, and you guys should be excited, im just saying don't get too over confident.

and you are assuming im Canadian why? cause i live here?
I was born in England and my mum is English, im half english half canadian so i have a right to cheer for my team.

apart from the game against Australia, Germany looks beatable,
and i believe we will.

yes you won the group because you scored more goals. but why is that considered more important then good defense? just wait till a team lights you up and you'll come back wishing your defense was better

putting all this USA and England hate aside,
did anyone watch the Brazil and Portugal game?
I thought the ref did a great job, yellow carded portugal for both talking back and diving, now that is what i like to see.

Germany will beat England, USA will beat Ghana, calling it. Coming into the world cup England was so over cocky and now they barely made it out of the group. Germany will destroy them. USA won the group and has been steadily picking up momentum. Yes our defense sucks but it seemed to just fine against England and Algeria and Ghana is no England so we I dont think there will be much of a problem.

My bet was 10 dollars they make final, 15 they win it.......If they make it and lose I walk away up 60, and if they win it I walk away up 250ish........

One. Northern Ireland is NOT part of Great Britain. It is part of Ireland. Yes, it is in the United Kingdom - Being the same country, BUT, it is not part of Great Britain. Get your facts straight.

And of course they'll be laughing yet again when England, yet again, doesnt do shit. They all have like 1/10th the population of England. They can laugh all they want.

Are they good, or not good?... take your pick dude.

All that aside, I dont think anyone really looks beyond Ghana right now, seeing as THEY ARE GOOD. They beat us 4 years ago. They dont have Essien like they did then... but they are still good.The USA is a good team too, though... And I feel they can beat them. They are no Brazil or Argentina. I'm pretty sure thats all anybody is saying... unlike how many of the English went right ahead and just ASSUMED the USA sucked, and they would hammer them 4-1. Not so...

I feel the US team and the English team are pretty darn even in many ways... The USA threw up a crap game against Slovenia, least in the first half... Your guys threw up an unimpressive goose-egg against Algeria. We both came out swinging like normal though, in our final game, and both teams, for the most part, dominated play. The US should have had at least 2 or 3 goals in that game. England deserved about the same, frankly.

the English, and the Americans BOTH are heating up right now. I actually HOPE the english beat the germans, as it is. (nothing like England playing both Germany and potentially Argentina in the same world cup)


Also, I rooted for Canada during the Olympics. HTML line + Boyle was BEASTMODE. Go Sharks Go. (Pavelski's still awesome though)

If USA beats Ghana (who play way better than Argelia) you will most likely play uruguay... No way you win that match, they have better player than USA all around. Forlan and suarez are going to kill your defense.

If Rooney couldn't do anything against the USA, then why would Forlan or Suarez...  Besides... dont think Korea's a pushover... they played pretty well in their group, too...

Oh, and, you (one person) speaking for the rest of the UK is a very noble thing to do. Wales, Scotland and N.I should be endebted to you forever.

I agree USA totally deserve to be there. A goals, a goal. Doesn't matter if it bounced funny for the keeper, or if you scored in the last minute.

I think England will beat Germany (just) and then go on to lose to our even greater rival Argentina, and their cheating, dumpy little drug mule of a manager.

crouch, heskey and defoe have all played better than rooney, he's just been lazy and off his game. maybe he should wear his man u jersey instead of the england kit then he can score one...

He's not perfect and he's not having a great wold cup but he's still a good player and doesn't come off as cocky at all. You can't expect him to be on top of his game all the time.

He's easily top 10 forwards in the world...

He navigates the box like almost no other player, his finishes are flawless, and his work ethic is absolutely amazing. He's not flashy so much as he gets the job done. I'm not a fan of him really, seeing as I'm far from a Manc supporter... but the guy's got skill, and I'd put him up against any other forward out there. He would have made it huge even if he stayed at Goodison Park... He's a great player.

Is he slow? Maybe compared to Eto'o or Messi or something, but is game isn't speed, and neither is England's... so it suits well.

2-1 Uraguay takes the lead on a brilliant suarez shot, off balance in the box.

Dont count S. Korea out though... they are relentless when they have control of the ball as shown by their goal. If they get a freekick inside of 20-25m, they could equalize right away.

Yeah South Korean free kicks are gold most of the time. That shot had massive curve on it, and the spin took effect at just the right time. Soooo good.

I kinda wanted to see both of these teams make it, since I want USA, ahhhh South Korea almost had that, anyway... I want to see USA go through and I was hoping at least one African team would get pretty far.

we got Germany tomorrow against england.  Super stoked, and can't wait.  Schweinsteiger may not be in the game tomorrow and that is a HUGE loss on our part.  He is such a key player out on the field.  And now Germany being out Ballack and Schweinsteiger, we may struggle a bit.  But on another note, Klose will be back tomorrow after that bullshit redcard and he will looking to blast one into the back of the net.

Most streaky team in the world...

One day, they can go straight to the top and win Euro 2008.

The next, they drop one 0-2 to the USA or 0-1 to switzerland.

You dont see Brazil, Holland, or Argentina dropping easy ones like that... and especially in the hapless fashion of the spaniards.


For that reason alone, I dont want them to win it... throw a little bit of "They look COMPLETELY homo'' in there, and yah... not a Spain fan lol

Uruguay's 2nd goal made me jizz in my pants, beautiful shot. imo, favorite of the tournament on how fantastic it was.

I feel that the USA team just plays into these 1v1 situations and we always lose, so then we have to rely on our wall o' steel, tim howard. I think we just have to play no-nonsense defense, if they start to bring the ball down the line on a counter, dont hessitate to just kick the ball out, dont try to steal it, dont try to take them on 1v1, just do whatever they can to get the ball out and give us more time to get more guys down and coordinate as a team.

sparknotes no 1v1 for our defenders, ever.

I was gonna hate again, but the second half of your post was good, actually had good insight and knowledge.
But just saying before you said USA had an easy path to semis and now your saying no-one is looking beyond this game today.

If you guys do beat Ghana, which will be alot tougher then many Americans think, you will not beat Uruguay, they are too complete a team and very strong in every position

i actually can't wait till 2:30, really looking forward to the game, should be very good.

oh and about the Olympics, Toews was the best player for Canada and at the tournament, without him we would have been knocked out earlier

Offensively, I'd like to see a hyper aggresive Altidore today. Ghana plays hard and will not shy away from physical play, so we need Altidore to be a thorn in their behind.

It really could go either way today. if our defense makes some of the elementary mistakes that they have been making in previous games, they could put themselves in danger.

Should be a great game either way!

I'll be more than happy knocking off Ghana... However, I dont see how Uraguay is THAT amazing... Look what happens when a team can control the play against them? The Koreans downright dominated for the first 25 minutes of the 2nd half. Then, they nearly got the late equalizer when that one dude was 1 on 1 with the goalie. He had a terrible strike on the ball though...

Whether all of that means that Korea played better than it should on offense, or Uruguay's defense was just bad remains to be seen... but I think us Yanks have a chance. IF we beat Ghana, I feel we have a chance.

Still.. What a ridiculous strike by Suarez... That will up his price a bit...

Hahahaha perfect way to describe it.

The commentators said this before, that Ghana has only scored on penalties, which is good for the USA, but they usually lead an aggressive offense. SO if our defense decides to make a dumb mistake Ghana will capitalize on it. So I agree with skier x and the commentators. This is really anybody's game, I saw odds somewhere in which Ghana has like 51.3 or something percent chance to win. What happens if they tie here anyway?

Its like what I said before, we need to play no nonsense defense, dont take any Ghana players on, just try to slow them down, dont steal the ball or do anything cool, just try to slow them down and work as a team.

and if it ties after stopage time, there is a mandatory 30 min of added time, then if it is still tied it goes into penalty kicks.
