Converting GOPRO HD footage to usable footage.

Ok, so I used my friends GOPRO HeroHD for my french project because I don't own a video camera. I planned on using Windows Movie Maker for it because it's the fastest way to do something like this. I got home today, and tried to put the videos into WMM and all they are, are sound files. Can anyone show me a free program to use to convert these videos into .WMV format? All helpful suggestions will be appreciated and rewarded with k.
