i searchbarred

i picked up an orion xtr 12 inch sub for free the other day, it came in a pretty big box tho...

i dont know much about car audio systems..

is there a reason for the big box? i mean its like 3 feet long, a foot wide... its nice and all..but why so big?

does the wood help amplify the bass or something?

the basic question is, should i keep the bigger box? or down grade to a smaller box i have thats not in use?

My stock system works for me. If I hit the lotto or win a big poker tourney I'll upgrade my ride and sound system.

The bigger the box the more air the sub can move creating clearer and more powerful bass. If trunk space is a concern get a smaller box but your sub will not sound as clean in it.

or downgrade size and get a ported box. will allow air movement and also be smaller

i think there's a minimum amount of airspace the sub needs so look up your amp on google and find out how many cubic feet it needs then make a box that size that fits in your trunk.

The box is just as important as the sub or amp.. is the box sealed or ported? If its sealed and that big- that sucks- if you want a ported box they are usually bigger than sealed, and give deeper bass, but cant keep up as much as a sealed box. I used to like ports but now I love having a sealed box.

its not ported...its sealed. i have another smaller sealed box...its like 15 inches sq. and 3 to 8 inches thick...

If your smaller box doesn't sound rigt, go to a craft store and buy polyfil to put in the box. It basically gives the effect of more space inside.
