and advice...if you are looking to go there primarily for skiing, then definately go to the south island. north islands mountain (mt ruapehu) is still quite sick though, but there is way bigger selection in south island

do it i say flat in Wanaka (close to mountain good nightlife) if you love only park ride snowpark if you like little bit of skiing in between runs go cardrona. Also work at a bar doing day and night shifts (reliable for income). Thats just imo and i mostly ride park.

If you mean for a season then South Island is the place to be. Depending on what kind of skiing you want, the best bases are either Christchurch, Wanaka or Queenstown. I'd say go for it! You will have a dope as time

Queenstown sick, but quite expensive. Wanaka is real good for young people. Cheaper and closer to more, better quality ski fields in my opinion.

North island isn't even an option for skiers really. I'd know, I've lived here for the last 18 years.

Prepare yourself for some extreme partying my friend.

Yeah the terrain is sweet, shame it's closed half the time (No exaggeration, 50% closed days).  The South Island is where it's at.  If you want to ride mostly park then head to Queenstown or Wanaka.  Cardrona, Snowpark and The Remarkables are all relatively close by and have really sweet parks.  If you like your big mountain then you should move to Christchurch, it's fairly close to what are called the "Club Fields", which are a series of smaller, more rustic places with sick terrain and fewer people than your Cardronas or Treble Cones.  Google either Craigieburn, Broken River or Mt Olympus to see what I'm talking about...

I'm actually moving to Whakapapa on Mt. Rahpeu for the winter.  Gonna operate a snow cat over there.  I heard the mtn can be real sick when it's open.

If you want to move there permanently acquire a relatively rare skillset that's in high demand in NZ, accumulate $500,000 in liquid assets that you can bring with you, or meet and marry a Kiwi.

Otherwise, figure out if you'll be there on a tourist or work visa and get started with the applications.

Visiting first would be prudent if you're contemplating trying to stay there for more than six months.

NZ is awesome, about to head back for my 4th winter there in a few weeks. Agree with pretty much everyone in the thread, Qtown and Wanaka are the places to be. Not sure about visas for Americans, there are definitely a few around, so it must be possible, you might want to get that sorted pretty quickly.

Yeah when the weathers good Mt. Ruapehu can be sick. But Turoa has had a bigger park for a few seasons now.

I'll be riding a little park. I'm more interested in hiking and skiing powder.  Looks like both resorts have real good terrain for building jumps and hitting cliffs.  And a long ski season.  I'm working till Oct 25.
