lol yeah that explains why, even at the pro level, they fail 7/10 times.  Yeah get the timing down for a 95mph fastball, which takes .4 seconds from the moment it leaves the pitchers hand to the moment the catcher catches it.  and in that time you have to pick up the spin of the ball, if its a strike or a ball, and where in the zone it is, then you have to swing. mix that in with off speed pitches, a ball that starts at your chest and ends at your knees yeah good luck hitting that after seeing a 95 mph fastball at the knees. i have got a hit off a 93mph fastball pitcher with a probably 80mph curveball it is tough shit.  hes getting drafted prob 2nd round this year /claim.  oh and lax sucks. everyone who sucks at baseball goes to lax. fact.

fuck all the baseball haters its the best sport invented, and if you say football is you should go slam your head in brick wall. and its not even fun to watch all it is 11min of actual playing and the rest of it standing around counting down the play clock....boring as fuck /2nd rant

Vaughn could hit a 95mph fastball... so he could be fat as he wanted. Very few people can do this, there are pros in MLB who cannot do it and they are amazing athletes. I swear to you it is completely eye hand coordination and some people have it and some don't. I couldn't hit anything over 85mph cleanly so my career ended in high school. NO matter how much you practice if you don't have it you just don't have it. Its a hard concept for non-baseball people to understand, but it is why fat people like Vaughn get paid so much. They are a rare breed.

I play lax yet love the game of baseball. Watch the rockies every chance I get, but that goes for pretty much all sporting events haha. My dad called me a sports addict the other day because thats all ill do is watch sports. I dunno I just love seeing really talented people competeting I guess.
baseball though is an extremely difficult sport though, look at Ubaldos no hitter the other night. A whole line up of professionally paid atlhetes could not get a single hit off of Ubaldo, thats fucking spectacular in my eyes. So before you say anyone can hit a 95mph fastball check your self because getting a foul tip is something very little people can do at that level. Imagine the skill it takes to hit 45+ homers a year.

PS the other day when I was sick and didnt go to school I watched two soccer games, a baseball game and a hockey game... I think I have a problem

can someone post this evaluation of sports? i thought it was by ESPN or so, with 10 different aspects graded individually.

and if i remember, boxing was the "best" sport. think about it, reaction, body control/hand-eye-coordination, stamina, power and tactical aspects.


i dont like boxing, i just wanted to put this out.

what a boner..there are easily a million and a half things harder than hitting a baseball

put a monkey in a batters box and give him one hundred swings I guarantee you he makes contact more than a quarter of the time


So many things wrong with the sport of baseball between the steroids/no parity with teams buying championships/excessive time between pitches...the list goes on and on

The sport of baseball has been dwindling for years and thankfully is on its way out

that's quite a statement. i disagree, it depends on where you are from, what's big at your school, and what other sports you enjoy. It is true that baseball takes talent, but some people enjoy a more physically demanding and intense sport, and want to actually get a good workout. Nobody can argue that baseball is as physical as lax. People who never played baseball, but played sports such as soccer or hockey would probably rather play lax in HS because of their similarities. Also you can't lay someone out on the 'ol ball park either.

haha i think my chances of hitting a 95mph baseball are a LOT better than jumping 16ft in pole vault.. or 7ft in high jump.. im just saying.

you can connect with a baseball off pure luck just by swinging.. there is NO type of luck that will be able to get ur ass 16ft in the air to clear a bar pole vaulting.. just not happening

Yea I understand that, but Mo Vaughn was a fat slob who I would not call an athelete because the fact is that besides maybe on the line in football, which also does not take a ton of talent, he could not play any other sport.  To me, if a fat slob who weighs hundreds of pounds can hit a 95mph fastball there is no way it can be the hardest thing to do in sports.  And I played baseball I know its definitely not an easy thing to do, but definitely not the hardest.

Lacrosse goalie is by far one of the hardest positions in any sport (mens lacrosse). That 95 mph fastball would be a medium speed lacrosse shot (college/pro level). Not only that but it's a bigger net to protect than hockey and lacrosse goalies typically only wear a helmet, chest protector, cup and gloves as far as protection goes. I have tons of respect for anyone who has the stones to play that position. I mean, I've eaten shots as a longpole, but I could never do it every practice and game over and over again.

Michael Jordan who is arguably one of the greatest athletes in the 20th century could not cut it in a minor league system. He could not hit the baseball. There is a difference between hitting a major league fastball and hitting a baseball in little league or high school which are talking about (which most people on NS probably did). That fat slob has a gift that many people wish they could have. His brain could react in time to hit a major league fastball. Its maybe not the single hardest thing to do in sports but it is one of them and it has nothing to do with athleticism. Also stop dissing on Vaughn, he is fat but not a slob. I've met him and he is pretty chill for a professional.

Lots of things take skill that are boing as hell to watch. I played baseball, and have a good knowledge of the game, but seriously if it is not playoffs or opening day it is the one of the worst spectator sports out there.

For god sakes the ultimate defensive play is to make sure that nothing happens. I am a firm believer that if beer didnt exist, neither would baseball.

if you didnt quite see what i was saying, i was comparing pure talent of a baseball player to the pure talent of, in my opinion, a true athlete like bryan clay.

and i did play baseball in high school until i got sick of it and started running track. which i now do in college. 

baseball just seems to take no athleticism in my mind when compared with all the other sports out there. i do think it rivals curling, pool, and dare i say poker? haha but otherwise.. i really don't see any type of athletic ability needed. Lets be completely honest here, how many times does a MLB player ACTUALLY run through first base, instead of not even trying because they assume they are going to be out.. like is 90ft really that far? is your salary not enough for you to actually show some effort?.... idk. go ahead and rip into me idc at least im not stating fact here, just my observations and opinions.

Am I saying that baseball takes athleticism at the level of decathletes? Nope, I am just saying that it takes much more skill and athleticism than you think. If you quit high school baseball than you didn't compete at higher levels and frankly you don't know what it takes. I personally have played soccer to football to golf to baseball, and I find hitting a fastball is harder than anything. I respect your opinions but I have my own observations and opinions. I really disagree with you and I don't think poker is a fair comparison to baseball. I worked for countless years to be able to throw an 80mph pitch and to play shortstop and to hit a fastball. Just like you probably worked for years to run track well (unfortunately the college scouts said I could not hit a 90mph fastball so I couldn't play D1). I do not like it when people make assumptions like you are. It seems stupid... like if I were to say it takes no skill to run in circles (which it does I am using an example).

Ha I wasn't arguing that it is fun to watch... Just that it takes skill. I do find faster paced sports like Hockey and Football much more entertaining on T.V. even though I watch a lot of baseball.

And if beer didn't exist than that would blow

baseball isn't a sport you go to watch just purely for the sake of watching. Unless it's an incredible pitcher's duel (i'm thinking of a martinez-clemens game at fenway years ago) or just a ridiculous game that ends like 16-15, it is boring.  You go to watch other shit, and eat peanuts and shit.

I could care less about baseball, but i work for a pro team, so as long as they keep playing, and the games go fast, i'm alright with baseball.

amen to that my friend. just the way of the world.. opinions are opinions. haha but i do agree it takes no skill to run in circles... thats the truth. we all just compete at higher levels and thats when talent and practice really starts to take its place and its evident in both sports. i guess i just wish more happened with baseball, seems like there's just too much down time.

for the record, i run in circles with hurdles in my way, haha

plus i have a bit of a grudge against baseball cause in both my high school and college, the Athletic Director is also the baseball coach so their team always got to go places and had like 20+ different practice uniforms meanwhile all we got was a uniform that was 15 years old and was just absolute garbage, but we were required to go against bigger schools while baseball just played teams in the conference. but i guess this is all my fault for choosing my parents who didn't play the right sports in their high school and college haha.

Yes there is too much down time in almost every sport. But what I love about baseball is when shit finally happens it is a beautiful thing.

Haha I feel you though we had the opposite problem. Our uniforms where 10 years old and we didn't even have a practice facility and the basketball and track teams had charter busses and new uniforms every year. My parents didn't get me interested in the right sports either.

3: even the BEST pros are only able to get hits 35 times out of a hundred, so to say that a ... monkey ... could do it 25 times is just retarded - if anyone tries to argue that this makes it boring then do so, but then youll be getting into the area of opinion where i will not try to argue with you.   one of the first posts did a good job of explaining that it is hard to get into it if you have never played it or never at a serious level where understanding the game is necessary.

Wrong. I played competitive Lacrosse from 2nd grade til College, every position except attack, and Goalie is def. not the hardest sporting position out there. Fastest Lacrosse shot ever is only like 112 mph, shit, I shot 96 in HS. But the number of factors that have to go right in order to get that kind of speed is redic. I guarantee average shot speed is only 70-90 mph. Then you factor in distance from goal, how bad the shooter telegraphs his shots and a good D, making saves ain't THAT hard.

sorry everyone i might have worded this thread wrong. see when i posted it i was angry to begin with. anyway i still do believe that baseball i boring . however i know it takes skill like any other sport and do respect it as a sport . i personally think its lame and not interesting to watch
