OLD NEWS. But yah, his rap career is a pretty good joke. he tried to start a fight with someone in the crowd at one of his "shows". This has to be a documentary that is staged...nobody can let their fall apart that drastically, that fast. But when the final product of the documentary comes out...ill be the first to get it.

I remember reading somewhere that he got messed up and depressed from acting in walk the line due to him living himself into the role so much in that depressing story - it happens to alot of actors.

If you think about it its not really a surprise, they spend 60-80% of they're day to day life studying and living another personality and identity.

Utterly old news. And I'm pretty sure promotion was what it was. If I'm not mistaken he was making a pseudo-documentary about a white hip hop artist who was kinda bonkers. The Letterman show just happened to take place while filming and he decided not to break character.

To the OP, his Letterman appearance was EXACTLY one year ago today. Intentional?

2nd, his brother (River Phoenix) died on Halloween, 1993. I really doubt Joaquin was acting that was because of that. My guess is, he was just acting. His really is and excellent actor.
