30 hours of community service for a speeding ticket?

I got assigned 30 hours of community service for my first time offense... I was going 85 in a 65, has anyone else on here had community service assigned for a speeding ticket? I personally think it is kind of ridiculous.

I get 16 as a labourer on a construction site, in the summer and when I have a day off school here and there or a saturday here and there, but I live in canada.. 10-13bucks is pretty average.. I dont know anything about that states though..

i got a 26mph over ticket and no reckless driving.

although i did get a reckless driving ticket in another unrelated incident. which was eventually dropped to a careless driving. which is a misdemeanor with 3 points.

you can bitch as long as you want (not the OP since i find the punishment kinda harsh), but the best way is simply not to speed. it is not allowed, so what does it bring to you? (10 minutes of time saved (short trips) or adrenaline?)

just because it is possible to get away with it is not a reason to do it. comon, you can get away with murder, financial fraud and youre also not doing it

just respect the state and its (often senseless) power to force its laws, you are the only one losing.

Years ago I got a ticket for 95 in a 75 in wyoming, $200
Last week my lil bro got one for 75 in a 55 in colorado, $275

Community service sucks. I was on the front receiving line at Goodwill for 40 hours, people donate some nasty shit.

woah, this thread is dripping with pussy.

Speed limits on freeways/highways/interstates are completely bullshit.  Has anyone here ever driven on the autobahn.  For the most part, it is a poorly maintained, skinnier version of a highway here.  It has no speed limits away from cities and adjustable speeds (electric signs) in city limits.  Why do we not have this here? I really do not know, it's kind of a joke in my opinion.

really? when i was there it seemed super well maintained in most places, only a couple times it seemed kinda sketchy in some areas. maybe its just where i was at tho.  but anyway the whole time i was there, which was about a month, i saw one accident off the side of the road, which happened to be a tourist, probably american, in a rental.  and i only encountered bad traffic once, and that was cause of road work. 
there could be pretty  damn heavy traffic but you would still be going 100+ just because people stayed the fuck out of the left lane and werent complete retards like we are.

the messed up thing is that cars are designed to go way over 65 mph, and doing so is blatantly illegal, however speeding isn't completely outlawed because many police departments rely on tickets for revenue. Yeah i would have to agree that speeding isn't as dangerous as being a shitty driver. Drive a BMW at 100+ and tell me that isn't smooth. I'd feel safer in a car like that than a lot of other cars doing 80.

I guess everyone in this thread is either unemployed or works for minimum wage because if the ticket would have cost $200, 200/30 = 6.66. My time is worth allot more than $6 an hour.

im with this guy. yeah you should'nt have been speeding. but everyone speeds sometimes.

id rather take the fine and just work it off, with my high school wage if its a $200 ticket that would have taken me half the time.

Your guys' arguments against speed limits are retarded.

Yes, I know, you're a teenage driver, therefore, you're invincible. But for the rest of us in the mortal world, the math at those speeds is pretty amazing.

At 85 miles per hour (the speed that the retarded OP was caught at), you're actually traveling at 125'/second. Look at your watch for one second, and then think about how you just traveled over 40 yards in that one second.

Now, the average brake reaction time (in real world situations) is 1.5 seconds. And that assuming you're not talking on the phone, texting, adjusting the radio, giving a hand job to your buddy in the passenger seat, etc. Study's show, while texting, your reaction time doubles. In 1.5 seconds, you're going to travel just under 190'. While texting, at 3 seconds, you just traveled almost 400' BEFORE YOU EVEN START SLOWING DOWN.

Now, an AVERAGE car, in good conditions will have a stopping distance of 345' from starting to press the brake pedal, to a complete stop. Now, say you drive a truck, roads a wet, sandy, or icy/snowy. That stopping distance will be much longer. Or even if you have 3 of your buddies in the car (450lbs extra in the car).

Basicly, in perfect conditions, with the driver paying pretty good attention, you're talking 535' before you can stop.

Go outside, figure out how far 535' is. (hint: 1.75 football fields). Now, think about coming around a corner on the interstate with an animal in the road, debris, or an accident in your lane. Do you think you can stop in time? I doubt it.

And in shitty conditions, it will easily be over 1000' before you stop. By then you've already slammed into the back of the ambulance that was stopped.

Now, I know most of the readers of this stopped a long time ago, because this many words scare you, and a lot of the words haven't been taught in middle school yet. But for those of you who hung in.....just think about it next time you think you're Jeff Gordon.

this is exactly why people need to stay the fuck out of the left lane, if im speeding by much, i try to give everyone ALOT of room, its when i come up to someone not paying attention in the left lane going 10 under when i have to brake hard and get up close to them, then if they are really dumb they stay there making me go around them, in the slower right lane, making me me come up on even slower traffic.  now i usually slow down to the speed limit or even lower if i have to pass in the right lane.  but if people werent such dumbfucks that whole dangerous situation would be avoided.
it makes the speeder look like the bad guy and the dumbass hogging the left lane look innocent.  its stupid.

look at germany, and other areas in europe where they dont have speed limits on alot of their highways, and they are statistically MUCH safer than the us highways with speed limits.  the average speed you see people going on the autobahn is probably around 110-130.  with the occasional person going like 150.  and its because people pay attention, stay alert, are aware of the cars around them, and most of all leave  the passing lane for passing, that accidents are more rare.  and thats traveling about twice the highest speed limit you see on an american highway. 

people dont have to slam on the brakes for a car going way slower than they that the suddenly come up on because it just doesnt happen. 

they are traveling about twice that 40 yards a second, yet its much safer than us going half the speed.

so again, its not the speeders that are dangerous, its people that dont know how the fuck to drive. 

im not saying you should be able to speed wherever the hell you want.  neighborhoods and some city streets definatly need speed limits.

and i agree that animals or debris in the road are much more dangerous at very high speeds, but the only time obsticals come up on you suddenly is usually on winding roads, which kinda prevent you from going very fast. and if you know how to drive a windy road safely yet quickly, ( extra slow into corners, and gradually accelerate out, so slow entrance fast exit)  you can still be just as safe as anyone going the speed limit.

In Utah, there are times when everyone drives 20 over. And people almost always drive 10 over. The state for sure makes a huge difference.

Im actually a ridiculously safe driver. I hate riding in the car with reckless drivers.

On the interstate, 85 is a totally legitimate speed. Reckless drivers should be ticketed. And it really should be cracked down on.

your little thing about snow and ice. did he say he was driving on it? Driving 85 on ice or snow you deserve a ticket.

Ill drive 64 usually in all 55s, so i dont get a ticket. Ill sometimes drive 25 on the back road home at night on the way home fromm work because its curvy and there black ice.

Idk your whole view of speeding is ridiculous. Just because you took a physics class doesn't meean that throwing around some numbers justifies your point.

For instance the cell phone law. when i talk on my cell phone, i have a hand on the wheel. Driving comes first, if anything comes up i throw the phone. bad weather i pull over to talk. Some people don't even drive with too hands on the regular. They drop a cd, and bend over the other seat to get it. no hands on the wheel litterally not even looking at the road. Shit like that. that's the problem, reckless/careless/straight up bad drivers.

Driving a safe speed for the road your on should always be enforced. All this technology they keep coming out with. The comercials about making driving safer. None of that technology does a whole lot compared to people actually learning how to drive in the first place.

I was drivin' with a smoke in one hand, mini Charleston chews in the other, steerin' with my knee. I dropped a mini chew between my knees, my crotch catch reaction activated and my knee jerked the wheel, swerving me into the shoulder. haha. I think I was watching a DVD at the time too. I couldn't care less if I crashed into a bus going from the orphanage to disney world.


in short, you're just as bad as the dude you were quoting, and anyone else in this thread who's layin down the rules of the road

speed and get caught, try to fight it, or pay up
speed and crash, be held responsible
drive recklessly and make it to your destination, bottoms up

i know what you mean, i say the same basically when skiing: i can ski fast on a crowded slope and its less dangerous than some random fucker that has no clue about skiing and will crash every 10 turns.

so i cannot really say that i dont feel your point. but it is proven that self-over-estimation is more a standard than an exception. so, while you might be a good driver (idk), it doesnt say anything about how the mass should drive.

btw, what do you lose? unless youre travelling 200 miles every day, you wont lose too much time and in return you receive a increased probability of surviving an accident and a decrease in the probability of having an accident in the first place.

I agree. Just do the tiime, its not that bad. I think the judge showed leniency by giving you that. I would MUCH rather have that since I'm broke, but I'm sure a lot of the rich kids on here would hate it since their parents just pay the ticket for them anyway.

Parents can't do community service for you can they?

Also, is it true that you still have yoru permit as the first poster said? if thats true and you were goign 20 over, you're just retarded and I have no empathy for you.

This is what I tell my sister.. she drives 90 on the highway sometimes. Fucking ridiculous. I speed reasonably, if you can call it that.  Usually about 70-75 in a 65, never in the left lane, and it's only because I'm trying to pass up all the soccer moms in their vans who are steering with one hand and trying to manage their children in the backseat with the other.  I fucking hate other drivers.  I agree with whoever made the post earlier in the thread about taking a more extensive driving test.  More so than anything else, having more-qualified drivers on the road and less drivers total, would help alleviate accidents the most.  The driver's license test process should last about a month and cover all kinds of conditions and areas.  Prior to that, you should have to take a test to determine whether or not you're a blithering idiot.  If you fail, no license.  The ability to be logical and use common sense should be the biggest determinant on whether or not you're allowed to drive.  Driver's ed classes should start when kids are like 13 or 14, not just the bullshit four hour class you take ONCE before you can get your restricted license (at least where I live). 

But on the topic of the OP, he's an idiot for going 20 over, and an idiot for being caught going 20 over.  If you feel it's absolutely necessary to speed, at least be alert and watch for cars parked on the side of the road.

speed limits and the cops who enforce them are retarded.
i know way more people that have caused accidents that drive the speed limit everywhere than people who speed.
my dad hasnt been in one accident in his life and he drives extremely fast everywhere, 90-100 on the highway, and if its some county road or just any road thats straightish and doesnt have many people on it he will cruise at 110-120 without even thinking about it. 
and hes never been in one accident.

now my mom who says she is against speeding and if anything drives under the speed limit has been in 4 accidents, plus alot more little fender benders.  3 were her fault, and with one the other driver got hurt pretty bad.
i feel way safer riding in the car with my dad going 110 than my mom going 40 mph slower.

same with my friends, the only people i know who have gotten in crashes so far are dumb chicks who dont know how to drive and do everything slow, and a tool guy who's against everything illegal.
all people who dont speed.

so if you dont speed, you should.

I was with you until you said this. At least understanding what you were saying even though I don't completely agree. But saying THAT... is just stupid dude. I know plenty of people that suck driving at or just under the speed limit that are SO bad that at speed they would probably kill several people.

but imagine that those "bad drivers" would speed? your argument is a little weak. how would you control that? rank drivers according to their ability and if someone is bad, than he has to drive slow, and the good ones can drive 200 in a school zone?

except ive never been in an accident, not even any close calls that i can remember. i average about 25000 miles a year, about a third of those miles are on snow. and im pretty sure im the only one of my friends or family that hasnt been in an accident or hit something in the snow. and i speed all the time, i just do it when its safe, i leave distance, and i pay attention, i dont text, or talk on the phone while im driving, i never drive after drinking any alcohol at all, i dont do any of that shit. which is alot more than any of the anti speeding pussies on here can say. hell i even check and adjust my tire pressure twice a month. 

 i can honestly say that im a safer driver when im going 90 in a 75 than the majority of people going the speed limit. because the majority of drivers dont know how the fuck to drive or control a car, they get distracted and they dont pay attention.
