Dislocated shoulder

I've had seven subluxations/dislocations total, with 3 total severe dislocations that required ER visits to reduce. All in the past 3 years.

A subluxation is essentially a dislocation that is on the edge of the shoulder socket. It typically rolls back in on it's own. A full dislocation has typically found itself well on the outside of the socket and requires significant manipulation to be placed back into the socket.

As far as treatment goes, you will want to rest it for the next day or two. Take it easy. If you have any swelling ice it. If no swelling, apply gently heat compresses periodically for a short duration. This will stimulate blood flow and speed up the healing process of the region.

Dislocations and subluxations typically cause tears in the labrum, which is cartilage in the shoulder joint. This is what makes you more prone to having future dislocations.

Your best bet at this point is to do physical therapy religiously on your shoulder from here on out. Rotator cuff strengthening exercises are going to need to become your best friends. The rotator cuff muscles help to stabilize and will help to limit the negative effects of the torn labrum in the shoulder.

Take the time now to let it heal, stabilize and strengthen. If you suffer recurrences, it might be time to consider surgery.

Good luck though. No matter what happens, your shoulder will never quite be the same. The start of my downhill slide was a quick in and out while ragdolling on a fall, and then I severely dislocated the following summer doing a handstand in the pool. I never took PT seriously before, and I'm paying for it now.

but have put it in place again by myself all the time. In august i had a surgery. The rehab time for my shoulder is 6 months and im on 5½ now. But ive skied for a month now anyway because this innovation of mine. Since i made it ive never been worried for dislocating my shoulder again. The thing is that you dont want your shoulder to get in upper positions were its weak. In principal its to leather belts locked to each other. Can be a little bit harder to grab the nose (differ of how tight its tensioned) but thats a minor problem. Make one yourself and have fun!

i hurt my shoulder two weeks ago while i was trying some of that real skiing everybodys talking about these days. it hurt like hell but i never went to the doctor with it since it was in place and not broken. had very limited movement, couldnt realy put a t-shirt on by myself without agonising pain for 2-3 days after.  just stayed home from work a couple of days and tried not to use it that much when i got back to work. and now it feels almost ok again. but some times when i'm moving my shoulders to fast the pain comes back.. or if i'm moving it in a wierd way (like when i closed my car door yesterday and the pain just kinda "struck" it and then went away).
i thought it was no big deal and i was recovering just fine... then i found this tread. now im f¤%ng scared!

Thanks for clearing things up. i just dislocated my shoulder yesterday. third time into ER for the same shoulder.

I've tried physical therapy once, it helped but i think this time, i'll just practice the exercises they told me to do the first time.

I got a question though, i thought about it once but never looked into it. Do shoulder braces exist? like the ones you see for people recovering from ACL but for a shoulder. Cause I'd use one to ski possibly.

um, no. when your shoulder is out it does not move. trust me you would know

Well you can move it, but it hurts like a bitch. That dude would have known if it was out.

i have dislocated both my shoulders.  the left one only once a few years ago, and my right around 12 times but it hasn't happened in almost 2 years (given, i don't ski like i used to...it's been a major mind fuck)

even had it dislocate mid air with a brace on.

take the time to let it heal and get strong again.

i pushed it with my right shoulder but took the time with my left and you already read the outcome.

get the rubber band and do those excercises.  don't heavy lift but more reps of smaller weights.

this is just my experience, of course it differs from human to human.

My friend dislocated both his shoulders doin a back flip. He was skiing in a week but he was really doped up on t3's.

i seperated my shoulder and ski with a sling and take lots of motrin throughout the day hahahah it sucks and when you fall just pull your arm into your chest and take it like a champ
