Lately i've been reading about and hearing about way to many accidents for my liking. No im not talking about an ACL or broken leg, im talking about broken necks and spines.
I want to take a minute away from all the arguing, flaming, selling, jokes and fun that is NS and be serious for a moment.
Every year people die doing snowsports, not just people out there trying to throw dubs or having a first decent down some gnarly shoot in Alaska, not just kids who dont know what there doing and skiing out of control, im talking about average people like you and me.
I personally hate reading these things about people, it scares the shit out of me because i know it can happen to anyone, no matter how skilled you are it takes one mistake and you could be in a wheel chair.
See the problem is, alot of us ski and do not injure ourselves. We may fall and get bruised and a little shaken up but after a while of no real inuries you tend to forget you can get them. But theres a problem with that, the cold hard thruth about it is we werent designed to soar in the air doing flips and spins, we do it anyway because its a thrill but unfortunatly our bones arent as strong as we wish they could be and trees and ice are much harder.
Sometimes we kind of forget that were not invincible, you hear off all these stories of people behing hurt an injured and you think to your self " yea ok, im not some noob going to ski into a tree, or eat shit on my misty" well anyone ( yes even tammy wallnutz ) can crash on some of the simplest things out there. More often than not these crashes arent serious but sometimes they are.
Im not trying to be the guy bringing some grim message and scaring everyone, i just want people to read this and keep themselves in check, as much as it pains me to read about anyone severly injuring themselves i know it would hit alot closer to home if it was a fellow rider like all you NS'ers out there.
Basically what im saying is, were human, our bodys can only take so much, we have limits. Should we try and push our limits? yes of course we should but do it at a safe rate. This isnt the most well written thing out there, i know but i still wanted to say something after hearing about way to many deaths/ paralyzing accidents lately.
Wear a helmet, be a smart skier, keep incontrol, know your limits and push them but progress at a realistic rate, have fun a stay safe!
Just looking out for all you fine guys and gals on NS ( <3)
