Buying Ski DVD's

So we all know that in the rest of the film industry, DVD sales are declining. I'm fairly sure that action sports films are no different... though we might be behind a bit on that front.

I pose the question to you the consumer - are you still buying Ski DVD's? If you are, are you buying less or more these days? If you are buying less... why?

I think this is a pretty interesting discussion to have.

not all because thats what a movie is about .. better quality of filming , tricks ,editing , music , everything...better  than what you can find on internet and thats what makes me buy film

still buy 2-3 movies per season. i just get last year's dvd´s because they are way cheaper or get whatever is available on itunes. it's getting alot tougher out there nowadays

i normally try and get a couple of dvds each year, this year refresh, resession

but i think the future is definitely in downloads - i downloaded contrast and edias from poorboyz at $15 each and i reckon that price is about right - cheaper than a hard copy but no extras etc.

Also as someone already mentioned, being from the UK sucks, by the time they're in shops over here most are going for the equivalent of $40

i generally buy 1-2 real physical dvds, and then a bunch of itunes downloads when they happen.


level 1 i buy every year, cuz i know its gonna be banger. and i frequently get poorboyz as well. the rest ill only buy based on a year to year basis of what i hear, or see at a premiere.

I haven't seen a .zip or a torrent of s ski movie ever, i even used to look on limewire before i got a bank card cause i could only find videos in the shop.
Now i love buying DVD's cause you can take them to friends houses and stuff but the new itunes way is made easier. I bought 3 movies just so i could see them but Refresh on DVD is a must and i wish you could buy all the classics on iTunes cause it took me forever to snag a copy of Session 1242, i want some old Level 1 movies up on there.
I agree that taking them off the Pirate Bay or something is down right dirty, really is.

yea I buy off the net, and always look for cheaper deals since it costs an arm and a leg to get em shipped to Australia plus get some free stuff. When they get sold here at snow stores they go for 50 bucks pretty expensive although when I get them straight from the companies postage adds up to be pretty much that anyway.

Have bought Level 1 for a few years now, and then what ever other company I choose.

i usually buy 4 or 5 each year. level 1 and poorboyz are the only two companies that i buy from every year

but the number will go down now that i'm done buying MSP's films. or maybe i'll buy TGR's films instead...

Last year I purchased a ton of ski dvds, but the companies have been selling through itunes where it is so easy and inexpensive for a ski movie that i have done most of my purchases there. I think it is a great idea to sell through itunes and the companies will have sold to people who have never even purchased a physical dvd in the past.

buying a ski vid used to be the only way to see the newest, hottest stuff. i feel like there is no anticipation anymore. most of the riding, tricks, format, etc is that same over and over again, a double cork 12 is a double cork 12, it doesn't make it any sicker to see 15 different dudes do it in their segments.

i remember the level of anticipation when Session 1242 came out, or WSKI, was unreal, i would have done anything to see those vids, and they changed skiing forever......now i feel like the whole ski movie segment is a giant....MEH...

this year I was kinda like if I see those vids cool, if not, no biggy.....problem is you already know what your going to be seeing...its not exciting

also, most people simply can not afford to buy a lot of vids, especially when they are going for $40 a pop in canada. i bought 2 vids this year.....one was refresh and I feel it was a waste of money. i watched it once and have no more desire to watch it......4 or 5 years ago i would literally watch my vids 100s of times a season...

i have definately hit the torrents this year, and i have even watched some torrents once and then deleted them cause i didn't think i would watch them again......although i did first watch That's It, That's All off a torrent, i went out and bought it that same day cause it was just that damn good. it blew me away the way ski vids of years ago did....

I am wondering how many videos you payed for this year Doug? and if you did have to pay for them, how many you would have purchased? I'm willing to bet maybe 2 or 3, cause lets face they are expensive....

only bought 1 this year (contrast) and win prob only buy 1 or 2 a year from now on.

personally i find there is alot of overlap with the movies as far as style of skiing and general vision of the movie and the overall direction.

i also realize more and more every day how much a dollar is really worth, not to mention the majority of the skiing content can now be seen online for free, with TC, chuglife, clownschool edits, 4bi9, 2bi4, etc etc etc

i think it might be because theres such a bigger variety of movies out there this year that people i have harder choice. atleast thats how it is for me, i havnt ordered a movie yet cause i just cant decide which one to get and i dont wana spent 100 to get all of them

I'm stoked when I can get something with schwag included as a preorder, or alternately if it's something like how the Voleurz crew do it.

The only DVD's sitting in my room are ski DVDs and i'm happy to keep it like that

I really do think that only the best of the best will stick out and be purchased. It's a case (which has been mentioned) where the rest of the content available here e.g. 4bi9, Clown School, some of the scandinavian edits, Chug, TC and the rest of the pro blogs etc, are taking up a large part of the overall video demand so unless something clearly stands out from them then people probably won't be able to justify the cost.

As pippin said, marketing going forward will get very interesting and different.

yeah definitely, in high school i bought a lot (and lost a lot) but nowadays ill buy one tops. this year i just bought pretty good and edias on itunes. i wish all the good ski movies were on itunes

I have never downloaded a ski movie, but I've never downloaded another movie either. I was buying more DVDs 2 years ago, but I moved out and now I have to worry about money for food. you know, in this economy...
but I still go to premieres...!!

Thanks for that thread bishop, those are some good marketing advices for filmmakers.

Like someone said in an other thread about ski movies, the "buzz" around ski movies vanishes as the we get older and used to ski movies. If a kid gets into freeskiing last year and buys all the movies this year he'll be as stoked as we were watching Happy Days or Forward for exemple.

Ski movies will still have some hype as long as kid will start freeskiing.

Unfortunatly, I think web distribution is taking over DVD production. Were we richer 6 years ago? Some will answer: "fuck yea economic crisis" but fuck that, 30$ for something that gets you stoked every morning before skiing isn't that much, and if you have enough money to buy a season pass, you have enough money to buy a movie.

In addition to that, maybe thats just me but, holding a brand new dvd box with a sick sick sick cover is something really nice that you dont get when you just buy a download over the internet. And I remember as a kid finding like a sticker or 2 in those dvd boxes and this little detail juste made me sooooo stoked.

so anyways, i guess it'll all be digi in two or three years.

And to the guy who said TORRENT DOWNLOAD, you are one stupid person.

Anyone who is trying to do anything in skiing is obviously broke as fuck so its understandable that we aren't purchasing movies.. Just hit the premieres up and support the companies that way, that being said there are different ways to support the ski industry other than emptying your bank accounts into it.

The past few years I've bought 4-6 DVDs a year, but this year I'm on a budget and have only purchased one. I'll probably buy this year's DVDs next year when they're less expensive, or digitally through iTunes. And most of the segments I was really excited to see this year have been posted in the video section on NS, so I don't really feel the need to purchase the DVDs just yet.

the sales of DVDs has definitely declined. personally, back when i first got into skiing, i was stoked to get as many movies as possible. Would buy probably 3 or 4 movies a season, and my buddies would get the others i didnt have. More recently, i have found bank account to be financially turbulent, with little money. The only movies i get are the ones released on itunes (i.e. pop yer bottlez, enjoy, pretty good, edias, etc) That being said, ski movies are generally like $25+, for only a few hours of footage at most. Ski movies are like no other ski press, they are the HD, progressive, and always get me stoked, but i just cant afford them. I understand they are priced because the companies are trying to make a living, so i would never ask them to lower prices. Similarly, since the emergence of online edits, there is a ton of rad videos available on the internet which im sure is taking away from peoples need to get their skiing footage fix.

sparknotes: cant afford movies. online edits are taking over

Over the past few years I've made an effort to purchase as many as I can each year. Last year I was fortunate enough to pick up 10 movies, and this season I've grabbed three, while also seeing a multitude of films at IF3. I'll continue to buy movies, because I know my money is going to companies that have roots in the community and industry.

I used to buy them all I have like 100, but now they are like 35 bucks and I could pay to go to Griz or Jackson or buy movies??  Theres so much leaking and footage on the net to its not as much of a suprize anymore.  I still buy TGR and some random ones though.

ill admit i downloaded two
but of the two i downloaded i bought the hard copy so i see no problem that i want a digital copy for free without transfering the dvd to my computer

as many have said before, as a kid in high scool, when it was coming out of mommy and daddys pockets, I would get all the hottest movies of the year for christmas. I still have some vhs movies back home. I think as you get older, you realize just how much of the actual movie is already on the web before you even buy the dvd. Like sure there are those few banger shots but most of the time, you can watch a hell of a lot of content just by puruising this here website.

also DVD is a dead technology. Digital media is taking over there are already USB portals in near every new dvd player and its just a matter of time before disks are obsolete. I mean I love holding a hard copy in my hand, I still go through the sales bin at movie stores even though in 15 mins at home I can have the same copy Downloaded to my hard drive that I wont loose, wont get scratched, and wont be eaten by my dog. Level 1 releasing the digital copy with their hard copy is pure genius they realize the future of movies is not on a cd but in a flash drive and I think thats just hte way to go.

I would much rather pay $15-20 for a digital copy, opposed to $40 for a hard copy.

Well, im in a tough situation this year.

I admit, I torrented many movies. All of which i had purchased but was waiting for them to show up at my door.

Now this is where it gets dodgey. I belive in supporting the ski industry, but my wallet doesnt. So i got a group of friends together, we all picthed money and bought as many ski videos as we could. I made copies of the DVD's and now me and my friends all have a bunch of ski movies without spending $200+.

Now is this right? I mean im suporting the industry by buying films, but at the same time making copies ( only to distribute to my friends that pitched ). If we all didnt pitch money i may have been able to buy one ski movie myslef, but with the help of other i was able to get 10.

Great thread Doug and excellent feedback NS. I have a few questions for the NS crowd.

If given the choice of purchasing a film for $29.99 US with tshirt and sticker pack or a $15 digital download, which do you go with?

Does over 2 hours of bonus features on the DVD make you more likely to purchase a DVD?

Would you be willing to purchase online exclusive content like PBP's Jib Jam 2?


At Meathead, we're adjusting to the changes in technology and the economy just like everyone else. When we signed our deal with VAS, we made a point to make sure the suggested retail price was $21.99. We weren't trying to undercut any of our VAS distribution mates. Instead, we thought it would be best to give that $9 back to our loyal customers when they're pinched the most. Plus $9 can certainly get you PB&J.

One more question, if YOU could make a realistic package deal for a film + swag, what are some other items you'd like to see in the package? Is a tshirt/banada + stickers satisfying enough or would you like to see more?

Again, thanks for the insight NS. You guys are helping to shape and change the ski film industry and I must say I for one GREATLY appreciate everyone that purchased a ski film this year instead of pirating it. Thank you very much.

If the tshirt was dope ( maybe tall tee ) then for sure the DVD.
Bonus features dont matter too much for me.
If its cheap enough digital content for sure!

And yeah, maybe if you could pick what you wanted. Like Any Tee in the store + any Bandana in the store + a sticker pack and DVD for a set price would be dope!

i would buy hardcopy over digital any day
especially if it comes with free things

i dont like the idea of ski videos going digital at all
i mean if they are free digitally AFTER you buy the hardcopy that would be sick

but i dont see myself ever paying over like 7 bucks for a digital copy, i bought pretty good on itunes but i am still wanting the hardcopy.
