God+Skiing

so tonight i went to my usual youth group, everyhing was pretty normal we sang, i ate candy, then we went to small groups which is where kids my age all go in with our youth leaders and we talk about the topic. the topic today was distractions that steer you away from god. things such as video games, sex, porn, which were all understandable until they said sports/ hobbies... so in small group  i brought up the topic that there is nothing on this earth that makes me as happy as skiing. Now he kept trying to tell me that it wasnt healthy to have anything be remotly close to god which i understand but doesnt this seem a little messed up?? i think you should do what ever makes you the happiest on this earth but still respect god. but for him to tell me i should cut back on skiing, why? cus god is getting jelous... i do not believe that. what do you guys think? and im not taking a shot at my leaders, they are sick but it doesnt seem right to me.

yea definitely listen to your conscience homie. Skiings is a great thing to keep you happy, and much better than getting fucked up. Everyones goot get their dopamine somehow, and for me skiing is the best and healthiest way..... basically God=good, religion=bad

I believe God wants us to be happy and help others achieve the same along the way. Anything else just doesnt make sense. Ski till your hearts content and thank God you are healthy enough to do so.

I am deeply religious, and at this point in my life, there is nothing that makes me happier than skiing.

As long as I'm not worshiping Norse snow gods, I see no problem with this.

Never trust what someone has to say because of their position of "power" or "leadership". Religion is at its heart based on faith, so for anyone, especially these youth pastors, to preach at you like they are certain of themselves is 100% bullshit. Do whatever makes you happiest. Learning about God made them happiest, so they became youth pastors and devoted their lives to God. To each his own, I suppose, but like I said, take their comments with a grain of salt. If skiing makes you happy, give it your all.

I'm going to try to refrain from posting in this thread, except of course for this post saying that I will refrain from posting.... But nothing, and I mean NOTHING makes my blood boil more then religion and those trying to shove it down your throat.

Idk what to say here exactly. For me..i had a point in my life were I was a bit confused about skiing being too important as well, it was hard. But God showed me thats its a gift that he gave me to do for Him out in the outdoors and nothing in the world makes me happier. I beleive thats what God wants for me. you have to be careful with group leaders and people like that in a position of power, tho for the most part they are only trying to help you. I dunno for me its always been just me and God in my faith. But everyone is different, keep skiing man! God made snow for a reason...ski it up!

If you believe in God, (which I assume you do, from the fact you're in a youth group etc.) then just say this: God created the mountains, the snow, the trees, the dirt, the rocks, the air, the sky, and all of it. Man created houses and streets and cars and buildings. and you feel closer to god in the great outdoors than you do anywhere else- fuck churches, the mountains are your church.

Just make sure you don't say that shortly after someone says "fuck it, the world is my bathroom"

skiing is a passion/hobby/a way of life for most newschooers, im assuming that you believe in god (being that you go to youth group and what your small group leader said) and with that believe in god you accept that god created you, me everyone and everything, including the snow and the mountains so as long as your honoring god in the process i would not go as far to say that you would need to cut back on skiing. god doesnt get jealous but if you can devote so much into skiing then if you truly believe in him you will make the time to have a personal relationship with god and your answers will be found within

I find skiing has brought me closer to god than anything, except perhaps surfing once.

I am non-religious though, agnostic I guess you could say.

hey dude,

this is the way i look at it. As a follower, its important to glorify God in everything you do. This does not mean sacrificing what you love most to do so. God has given us passion for a reason. To use it appropriately. I think you're taking your youth group leaders little sermon out of context. He's just trying to stress the importance of putting God first. He's not saying choose skiing or God. He's saying Ski with the intentions of glorifying God on your heart. For example, before going skiing, i pray for safety and I give thanks for the day he's presented me with. Skiing is god given. Don't worship the sport, but rather worship the one who gave us the sport.

And this is the issue I have with organized religion. You have to put it before just about anything else in your life. Like someone else said, you will meet him when you die right? Why worry now about it all the time. Go have fun skiing and tell the youth group guy he should go ski and get his shit straight.

i was brought up catholic but am the farthest thing from religious now. but i say to each his own and would never look down upon someone for being religious.

that being said i could never imagine someone telling me to stop doing something i enjoy so that i could focus more of my time on God. who does this youth group leader think he is? i bet if you talked to the leader of your church and said "ive found something in my life that really brings me joy and makes me happy everyday."

things like this really blow my mind. religion just baffles me.

god is everywhere right? a belief most Christians wont dispute. therefore when your skiing your spending time in nature enjoying all the beauty that he created, and when your skiing your creating a much more spiritual environment to connect with god. i have serious problems with religion and most people feel they have the right to tell me im doing wrong or sinning against god, so they can cram it skiing is as close to heaven i will probably ever get and i plan to enjoy it for the rest of my life.

Last Sunday I skiiped skiing to go to church and it turned out to be bluebird lots of fresh snow Ill take that as a sign that God wants me to ski.

I have seen this happen countless times... mostly in a church that I used to go to. It was at the point where we would have to stand up and say something that we enjoy doing more than spending time reading the word or coming to church etc. and then give it up. The point was to not make something else your god and that we should be fully content with God, not man made excitement. Honestly, what are you asking a nearly ADD teen to do? Sit inside all the time and be happy about it? Pretty extreme if you ask me. Needless to say, I go to a different church now. One where the pastor is as enthused with sports and biking as I am. We talk about sports and our time outside tearing it up all of the time. There are even small groups starting to get out and bike, ski, play football, ride motorcycle and just be active and have fun. We help fund skate outreaches and a trip to go build ramps in Guatemala is in the works.

I was thinking the same thing, it's pretty cool.

There has to be a couple people that ruin it, but I think it's mostly good because it makes people think about how they really feel about skiing, and nobody can hate on that feeling.
