who on ns races or used to race?
i admit, i used to race but i gave up because i would never know wich gates to go through, i would always just go straight down the hill, no one said anything, they probably thought i was retarded

i currently race at high school, were a pretty good team (5 state championships in a row) but i don't really care. everybodys pretty chill about me being a park skier

First off, is that West mountain? It look like where the gates usually are at west, but honestly that could also look like any other mountain ever.

Anyway... I have raced for two years, although because our team has basically disolved this year from lack of coaches and interest it looks like last year was indeed my last year. I would never consider myself a racer, and being told what to do was a bummer sometimes, but honestly my time on theteam was some of the most enjoyable skiing Ive done. It might be that our team is (was) very lax and most of our time was spent freeskiing. And even with the free time I suprisingly didnt spend too much time in the park (and it was West, not complaining but the park didnt have too much to offer). Whatever the case, I will miss those days going to the mountain everyday after school, waking up early to meet racing times...... although now I can do it on my own time so all is good.

People always bag on racers but you learn some pretty sick skills from racing that can be used anywhere.

No, this is in the midwest at Tyrol Basin. And my team was similar to yours... it was really relaxed and not too intense. We had a few serious racers on the team, but most of us were just turnin' gates for fun and just getting more ski days in during the school year.

I race on my high school team, just for the skiing tho. i get to leave school and ski. Its also a good way to become a better skier. And if there is over like 3 inches of snow our coach gives us the day off to freeski.

I raced in high school and would be no where near as good without the skills it taught me. Nice to see not too much racer hate going through this thread like usual. For those that like to poach the course you are just as bad as the guys poaching the park. there are just as many assbags in the park scene as there are in the race scene.

when i started skiing there was no such thing as a park. if you built a jump you might get 3 hits before patrol smashed it. Be thankful there are parks at the mountains now. Repect the racers like you would someone in the park. they love this sport as much as you do.

Just be thankful you get to ski. i live no where near ski hills anymore and am extremely lucky to get out more than once a season due to distance and finances. Thats a far cry from the high school days when i skied no less than 5 days a week. Those five days a week were at a midwest hill with a whopping 300 vert, but i loved every minute of it and continue to cherish those memories. you should do the same, enjoy every second on your skis and dont waste time with the hate.

i've been racing since i was 5 or 6 now im 16 and i go to school for racing and i get to ski everyday during the winter. for the kids making fun of racing, not cool. i completely understand how people can hate racers, but not ski racing the sport. a lot of racers i know are cock ass holes but a lot of them aren't. don't hate on racing, it's hard as fuck and to be good you have to work your ass off. hate on racers, not racing.

I always get a kick out of people that go completely overboard and bring a whole van full of tuning equuipment.  They have a 10x10 area roped off with every tool imaginable with benches, grinders,everthing. 

On another note... skiing has turned so badass with all the parks and countless features that have hit the hill.  I dare to say, it would be difficult to find a resort these days without any small park whatsoever. 

Like mentioned before,  I remember we would have to go off to the side of some trail and build our own jumps,  only to have them destroyed and scattered by patrol a few runs later.  Park skiing has added such a huge venue to skiing,  for me it so exciting seeing how it has taken off in the last 25 years.    I only wish i had gotten into it sooner.

i raced for 6 years and loved every minute of it. i made an assload of friends and connections in the industry all over the country. i got to travel all over and miss a bunch of school which was sick. racing made me an amazing skier and i have been told by people all over the country that i'm one of the best skiers they have ever seen. most of the pro skiers have some sort of racing background because it gives you the skill to get really good at any type of skiing from big mountain to park. i have no regrets at all about racing.

i raced for exactly 1 week 3 days 7 hours and 27 mins my freshman year of high school i got put 3rd or 4th on the team then made like a g and peaced

ive never done any formal racing programs, but my dad raced for years, and he taught me.

if my school had a ski team, i'm pretty confident that id be number 1 or 2 varsity easily.. no claim, just sayin

i wish i did do ssra and all though

I've been racing for 4 years. i started in 6th grade, and i've progressed a ton since then. last year, as a freshman, i placed 17th in the state meet. a year before that i really started getting into freestyle skiing and i got my first twin twips. now, i love both and do both in the winter. i make time for both and love it

i race for school in the winter, but all i do is race for 5 minutes, then hit the park. I get to miss school to ski. Now is it me or is that a fucking sweetass deal? Plus i race in twintips and baggy ass outwear: bringing steeze to the racing masses!

i had the fastest time for the day. they timed everyone, and had the list of fastest times.

nastar was used as a comparison, because my hill  only does this once or twice a year.

I been racing for forever and now go to a ski academy. But racing has helped me sooo much for freestyle skiing. Also i would get bored of racing if i didnt do freestyle on the weekends. But Cole is right some racers are complete dicks, but some arent. so u dont hate someone cause they race. hate them if they are a dick about it.

I think most of us on here having a racing pedigree, or at least one in which we used to just charge groomers.

There's a girl at my park who took up freestyle straight off, without learning to ski properly first. She decided she wanted to do FS (X-Games induced), and after 3 months of learning to snowplough and make basic turns, the coaches had her hitting boxes.

She can do a 90 on 90 off a x-wide flat box, and just about a penciled 3. But that's as far as she'll progress, because she doesn't have the balance or discipline or skills that racing or skiing groomers gives

I raced through jr high/highschool. Took 4 years off and started a team at my uni. But the team competed in skier X, Slalom, GS, Pipe, and slopestyle, so it was actually so much fun.

I loved going down the Slalom course on center mounted park skis, no shin guards, and no pole guards... My knuckles were black every weekend we raced, sooooo fun.

But its true, you can almost instantly recognize a skier who used to race, stance is different and they know how to use their poles. All through ski school training whenever I had a different coach they always asked if I raced. I took it as a compliment.

thatd be hard, i show up to practice on my twins on a gs day every once and a while and i can barely keep a line, but ive also never sharpened my edges on my twins
