Replying to Hearing about a death over the internet

OK, so a kid at my school who was pretty well known just passed away, he had a brain tumor that he did not know about, he was pretty well known and everything and its super sad.  but its the day before school starts and ever ones Facebook status is like "RIP :/ " or "L.L.P. (his initials) :(" idk i was just looking at them and all the emocons just seem disrespectful to me.  i just seems super inappropriate to put a emocon next to RIP.  i just want some second opinions i guess.
