Recommend a Bike for Me!

So I'm moving to Portland in October and since I'll be in the city, I'll need a bike for transportation. I haven't owned a bike since I was like 14 so I don't know a single thing about bikes. What is a good kind to get? The cheaper the better. GO!

go for an ss road bike, not fixie though. that'll be light, fast, and you won't be as much of a hipster if you had a fixie. Unless the frame is pink, then you'll be a hipster anyways.


seriously though... go to your local bike shop. Fat Tire Farm in portland is good for mtb, not sure where to go for road. Still, your lbs will help you find the bike you need.

I would but I don't know a damn thing about bikes! It's all gibberish to me. Crank? Cassette? Bracket? this makes no sense. I'm 5'8" and 150 lbs, if that helps.

I'm not sure if I even want a road bike, I just want something light that isnt fruity. I hate those bikes that make you bend over like abbygail may all aerodynamic like, but I like how light they are!

portland should have lots of bikes on craigslist. i also don't know anything about bikes, but it should be easy to find one at least

Get something like a Specialized Langster (I think). There are two in the LBS. SS w/flip flop hubs, but not fixies, plus, they look badass and are pretty cheap.

one side of the wheel is set up for fixed and the other is normal single speed, to change between them you flip the wheel over

Meaning you can run the drivetrain on both sides, although it might just be that one side is fixed gear and the other is not.

you could get a rigid (No suspension aka shocks) 29er(29 inch diameter wheels) mountain bike, then you could take it on some trails in your spare time and have a new hobby.

that's where i've been looking, I just don't know what to look for? I don't really even like biking, I'm only getting one because I don't feel like walking everywhere, which is why I'd like a cheapo.

unless you go used i wouldnt recommend getting anything under like $600...paying more up front will save you a bunch in the long run...i had a specialized rockhopper (until it was stolen a few weeks ago) and it was a great commuter bike and also is great for some trail riding and is about $700...but if you just need a road bike i would go used

Go to a place like goodwill or any other thrift store. I own a mtb and ride it on trails and to commute, but I didnt want it to get stolen while locked up at the mall or something. So i went to goodwill and lo and behold, a 2001 specialized hardrock, worth around 600 in its time, was there. I picked it up for 40 bucks.

find the local bike shop and pic up there bottom of the line hardtail. will get u everywhere u need to go. a basic specialized hardrock is like $380 i think. sometimes they have used bike too. specialized, trek, giant, and kona will have some cheap ones. i'm a bike nerd and ex-mechanic. any questions just ask this nerd...lol

hit up the portland craigs and you will defintaely stumble across a nice fram that is sutable for commuting.

dont hate on a fixed gear untill you have actually taken the time to learn how to ride fixed. they are hella fun.

if you think you're riding it mainly in the city, a good choice could be an hybrid road bike: fast and comfortable at the same time.
there are many different version of it, but i'd chose one like these:

with a road frame, flat handlebar and a road-oriented gear set
you can find more infos about this kind of bikes here:

as you can see, you can choose your set-up (frame, tires, gear, handlebar) being more or less similar to a track/road bike or a mountain bike...
they're not expensives as road bikes and i think you can find some good used ones

you live in portland and have some of the best mountain bike trails in the country within a half hour of you. I say get a mountain bike. Its an awesome summer replacement for skiing and you can still use your mountain bike for transportation. Ebay full suspension mountain bike and you can find some decent cheap ones

yeah but I'm not really into biking and am only getting one so that I don't have to walk everywhere. I was planning on buying some junkie thing from Craigslist for no more than $200, I just don't know bike terminology and all the listings have weird words to describe their road bikes.
