When people disrespect the men and women who put their life on the line for us. I literally fight people over this. IDK why, but i go nuts when people do this.

It's unfortunate that all of these groups (except paramedics, for the most part) attract ignorant, self-important tools these days.  I respect anyone who goes into these fields for the right reasons, but unfortunately there aren't many of them anymore.  Maybe it's not the same everywhere, but I've never met a firefighter who wasn't an intolerable douchebag.  Say what you want about heroics, but I don't think anything gives you carte blanche to be a dick to everyone.  One of my friends says that the military, firefighting, and law enforcement are "fraternities for people who couldn't afford fraternities"...some are good, some are bad, but almost all take the brotherhood way too seriously.

I'm sure I just opened myself up to a shitstorm here.

Yeah, well, probably, because it's an unfair generalization, but it's true of a lot of them. Particularly in certain areas. I actually think the military gets too much leeway in terms of respect, really. Teachers play just as important a role in society but they don't get the level of deference that your average soldier does just by virtue of his being a soldier. You definitely have to give them credit for their patriotism and willingness to sacrifice their lives if it comes to that, and thank them for their service if you meet one. But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of total idiot douchebag assholes in the military; there absolutely are. Maybe even a greater proportion than the average in other professions. I say that despite being a part of likely the douchiest profession on the face of the globe.

dude. we invaded iraq on suspicion of them having weapons of mass destruction. there were none. not north korea has TESTED NUKES in the direction of hawaii and made several threats towards us saying they're going to blow us the fuck up on the 4th of july, they use the most extensive government sponsored anti-american propoganda ever conceived etc, and we've done absolutely nothing about it.

yes there probably are more troops being stationed over there but we've ALWAYS had troops in south korea, nevermind south korea, we have troops stationed in 99% of the countries of the world.

come on use your head for jusssst a second and think about the rationale behind the iraqi conflict. yes saddam was an asshole to the kurds, but we have ZERO business being over there, besides our interest in oil.

i dont think i know many people who enjoy war. But shit happens and to be honest i would gladly die for my country to protect our values that people have taken for granted. Even all this shit heads on this site that talk out of their ass. In 2 years im joining the army as eaither airborne then ranger school or apache pilot. i feel like i owe all the men who died for us to live the way we do the same respect. Thankfully lots of people arent like you because if that was the case we would probs be speaking german.

Talk all you want about teachers and other people needing just as much respect. im sorry it takes a way bigger person to kick down doors in iraq with bullets flying and IEDs blowing up in their face everday then deal with fucking teenagers. half of NS are a bunch of stupid liberal fucks who know nothing about shit. Including that kid. Hate the war, dont hate the men doing their job, because honestly they are bigger men than 99 percent of the people on this site.

I dont know anybody who doesnt respect what the people who fought in the world wars did for the world. This thread is definitely about "disrespecting" troops who fight in Iraq right now.

The Iraq war is a war fought for economic gain only. There is no reason to respect the people who are fighting it like one would respect people who fought in WW1/WW2. The people in Iraq are not fighting for our freedom or anybodies freedom, believing that they are is simply ignorant.
I am not suggested that a lot of these troops wanted to go to war for the reasons that they are fighting, but the fact remains that i dont respect what they are doing because its just complete BS.


tl;dr: I dont think anybody here is saying "Fuck the Troops!". A lot of the people over there didnt chose to go to war or anything. However, a lot of people are opposed to the whole war in general, and thus see no reason to go out of their way to respect the people fighting it.

like i said earlier. Hate the war not the troops. How is it their fault they are being ordered to fight a war many of them dont believe in eaither. You should have respect for what they do for you no matter what in peace or war. They are ordered to do what they do and do their job which takes a lot more of a person to do than whatever your doing with your life.

What I find is interesting is the philosophy behind the notion of right and wrong. When you look at the military, they're fighting for what they believe is "right", protecting the "right" country etc. But fundementaly, killing is killing. Is a soldier considered a murderer? Or does the motivation behind the act change the lable and outcome? I obvisouly aren't naive and believe that we can ever obtain world peace through non-violence, however, I find it hard to respect anyone with a gun. But on a different platform, I respect that they are reporting for duty to protect the people of their country.

Tough subject.

I dont disrespect the troops. But i dont respect them more than anyone else. They are ordered to do things and they do it because thats their job and they chose to sign up for it. Same with everyone else who has a job. Theirs is just a lot less safe than other people's. It doesnt mean i should have the upmost respect for them.

Why dont you make a thread saying we should respect the people who work in meat packing plants more? They have a job they signed up for because they couldnt get a better one, its dangerous, they get told to do things and they do them... Whats the difference? (and please dont say that our troops are fighting for our country, because they arent right now.)

This thread is entertaining and interesting. First off, I'm from Canada and I don't really give a shit about the politics or give the effort to know all the details. So as usual, I will approach this from a simply moral standpoint.


The army is full of jobs that pay well, take care of everything necessary to live, and usually pay your way through education. If you come from a bad family or haven't had a really nice life up until that point, joining the army seems like a logical decision. I know a couple of these people (working in the kitchen of a grungy pub exposes you to the less fortunate people), and they aren't in it for patriotism. They are in it because it's a job and it's their choice. If they are sent overseas then so be it. That's what they signed up for and they'll do their job. These people don't deserve any extra respect in my opinion. They are just people with a job that has some extra little details to it.

The army can offer tons of thrills too. Some people like the idea of using explosives and shooting guns at bad guys. Or the adventure of doing dangerous things. The people who join with this as a priority don't deserve any extra respect either.

Hell, some people want this respect that they would automatically earn for doing this. Some people join so people will give them respect. So I will not give them respect just for being there.

Obviously not everyone in the army is like that. There are people who are there because they believe so strongly in freedom and democracy and so on that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for the rest of their kind. These people deserve massive amounts of respect. Whether these people are in the army, police, or are firefighters, it doesn't matter. If they do it for that reason they are amazing people. So I hold my respect for those who deserve it, because if they automatically gain my respect just by their job title the respect is meaningless.
