Tuckermans Ravine

Anyone ever hear of Tuckermans Ravine? Its a Ravine on MT. Washington open to sking. I was invited to go up in the spring with a bunch of other patrolers. Sounds like fun but I'm not shure if my line 163cm Line 1260's are up to the task.

hell yeah i've heard of tuck's...never been there though. it gets a lot of snow, i know that much because its susceptible to avalanches and its only open in the spring. your lines could probably handle it, but they're no pow skis...do it though, it would be so worth it.

I've seen it and shit from when we were driving to north conway. It looks big. I would probably TRY to ski it when I get older..

yeha i've been there when there was no snow, i hiked up it
i would definitely go for it, even if your lines arent;t he perfect skis for it
and if you're worried about it, jyst pick an easy line down

tucks is sick. you might want to use a little more burly ski though. its no joke, the kind of place where if you fall, you will fall a LONG way, and a good chance of falling over rocks.
its a great hike, and some of the craziest lines in the east.

I was thinking about Atomic R-9's. I don't need twins for tuckermans, i'm not planning on riding switch. What would u guys suggest.

id do anything to ski tuckermans. id even settle to ski it on 155 race skis, and thats saying alot, cause they suck for powder. use whatever pair is fatter and longer.

The R:9's will suit you better for Tuck's, but not as well as a wide waist ski like the Atomic Big Daddy, K2 Seth Pistol, Salomon Scream 10 Xtra-Hot, Dynastar Inspired...however if you are going to stick with what you have, use your R:9's over the 1260's.

the last 3 years i have gone to tucks, its been a powder day. that results in high avalanche danger though

i did it a couple of times on my rossi scratches last spring, worked fine, dont worry about it. It was probably better not to have to carry heavy fats all the way up there

I hear there are some faces up to 50 degrees... I can't wait to get up there this spring! are there any decent cliff hucks there? also, I heard that last winter they were taking skiers up Mt. Washington on the cog railway, did anyone here do that?

^ most of the time there are, no joke, over 1000 people up there. i went up there last year, in the spring, theres no pow in the spring, but the cruds sick. i did it fine on a pair of candides, i also skied 'the chute' without a problem, then found out its one of the hardest runs up there.
as for cliff hucks, not really, there are the falls, but its massive. saw a clip from the mid 80s of a guy frontflipping it, but its not a casual cliff huck. go to

I dont have the r9's yet, but I think I might pick up a set--i need something cheep since i allready bought boots this season. What type of crud? I'll be gooing in late march so i dont think there will be much pow but i'ed still like a pair of skis that are stiffer and have more edge. Then again, my light 1260's will make hikeing much easyer.

If you are going up to tuckermans prepare for a long hike through the woods untill you reach the headwall, about 1 and a half hours. I heard you could get a ride but I am not sure. i would definetly go even for just one run

I read yesterday on MountWashington.com That there were talks about taking skiers up on the railway but those talks fell through in fear of tons of skier up there who don't exactly realize what they are getting themselves into. And once your up there......

I have skied tucks the last two years. When I skied it last May there was plenty of snow but it was HEAVY. Be prepared with a burly ski that you are comfortable with in different conditions. The bowl can get croweded so this year I want to ski Hillman's Highway, a sweet chute with more vertical than tucks. Remeber to bring a celebratory beer to drink after a long day.

My friend skiied tuck's on his 163 line 1260s last year. They are center mounted and he did fine.

spring storms are not uncommon at tucks.

theres a lot of cliffs to huck, but theyre all real big, and high up in the bowl. very dangerous

i've been skiing tucks every spring for a few years now. www.timefortuckerman.com has all the info you need: pics, videos, maps of all the routes and their names, weather, etc. they have a pretty active forum too at least near the spring time. you will not find powder there, so bring stiff skis to power through the crud. tucks is as hard as you want it to be; the higher you climb up the steeper it gets. you don't have to be an expert. i definately recommend hillman's for a first run; you don't have to worry about the undermined snow from the river that runs right down the ravine. if you want to huck, jump the headwall, good luck. that website has vids of people doing back flips off it and stuff. if you want technical skiing, try dodge's drop which is next to/part of hillman's. it's very sketchy but i've seen lots of people do it. tucks is fun for everyone.
