Computer nerds.... Linux question

So i am going to be reformatting my hard drive on my laptop very soon, and was considering running Linux instead of XP Pro SP3.

Now my main question is whether i will be able to figure my way out using it. I have heard it is really hard to get used to, especially coming from Windows.

And my second question is what kernel should I run? I know there are tons of different ones to run, but what are the most popular ones/easiest to use?

Dont wipe out Windows unless you have used Linux, and its really easy to dual boot, so theres really no reason to wipe out Windows and as for what distro (Kernel really isnt a thing you choose) I'd suggest ubuntu, http://www.ubuntu.com/ its probably the easiest to use.

But you really should dual boot, its easy to set up, and then if you ever need Windows, you still have it.

Say i wanted to run Daemon Tools Light, or VLC or another one of the programs i use on Windows....

dual boot victor. use a 64 bit version of ubuntu, i can get you one if you need it. a lot of programs are compatible with lunix but theres still a lot that arent. and partition more to windows than you think youll need

I dont have a 64 bit computer

and by the time i reformat, i will have my external HDD, so ill split my onboard one in half

Ubuntu is probably your best bet. It's got the best support community out there too, so if you have troubles, it's pretty easy to find answers.

And like the people above me said, dual boot with XP.

Really dont plan on running your windows programs in linux, however VLC is native to linux too, and there are programs similar to Daemon tools too, dont plan on playing windows games in it though.

But for Photoshop theres gimp, Illustrator theres Inkscape, Office theres OpenOffice...

as long as they are circumcised and vista sucks if youre a 12 year old who has no idea what hes doing. if you know anything about computers then you can customize vista and it will be way better than XP. vista is good shit

Ubuntu is super easy to use. None of your windows software will work on it but I believe Linux has disk image mounting built in so you won't need daemon tools and VLC is available for linux.

i had it ubuntu for about a year, but i don't like linux personally. too much work to do things that i can do easier on windows or os x
