Morals aren't things of objective nature. Most of western society frowns upon the abuse of animals so I don't know where he got his morals from but my moral compass leads to him(the abuser) getting ass raped for 5 years in prison. A good reason we have laws for people who abuse animals is because if they do that they are quite likely to abuse a person as well. The kid that did this obviously needs some form of help.

consider a hypothetical situation where you are being held captive by a crazy guy who gives you two options: to either torture and slaughter an innocent kitten, or torture and slaughter an innocent human being... if you do not complete one of these tasks, you will be killed... I think it is pretty obvious what everyone would choose to do...

I am not supporting animal torture, maybe I should have made that clear, but I think jail time for abusing an animal is a little silly... therapy may be a better choice. Jail will probably just mess the kid up even more.
