09/10 Line skis are F***** up

I went up the lift with some stranger who talked to me about next years Line skis ( he works for SIA). He told me Line has been developing this technology for almost years and it will blow your mind. He told me next season Line will have an eperimental ski, like the Alpha 1, (eperimental wise, not the same contrtuction at all) that is not conseructed vertically, but constructed like a skateboard. I'm not in expert in ski consruction, or skateboard, but when he said the had no sidewalls, I started to smell BS. He said that this new concept will give more tip and tail pop and flex, and will be lighter and better then normal skis. I think this guy is full of it, but he said they would be shown at the 2009 SIA, so I'll just have wait and see.
It blows my mind to think it's true

Oh and he thinks the Invaders are going to use this tech, or a new ski, he's not sure

Line has always been ahead of the times, coming out with innovations that 3 years later the rest of the industry copies. This guy might sound a bit sketchy, but i wouldnt put it past Line to throw another new technology out on the market and see how it works.

sounds cool, what do you mean by constructed vertically? i know nothing about skateboards. but they've had the same invader/anthem for a few years now it'll be cool to see a new park ski design.

I mean skis are constructed vertically, like part A on top of part B, and so on. Skateboards are supposed to be different.

a little birdy told me that the invaders are going to be discontinued and instead a new ski called the afterbang's will take its place. So maybe what that bro said is legit since their supposedly gonna have a new ski.

I also heard that these afterbang skis, have wood sidewalls, like a skateboard with dimensions of 115-87-115. Also, they have some crazy graphics with a neon on both the tip and tail. So what you heard is pretty much correct.

i guess those specs are pretty much bomb

oh i really hope they come in a longer length than 178. like 185.

At least there trying new things. Unlike other company's that just follow and make little adjustments. I mean look at the invaders being symmetrical. Now other company's are following it.

from what i understand the 09s are a little stiffer then the 08s and the 2010s will be the same as the 09s. i may be confused though...

a skateboard is constructed vertically.  It is layered wood, usually 6-7 layers.  a ski core is horizontal, look at a picture of a core before pressing, the pieces are sidebyside, not ontop of eachother.

almost correct, you just got the names mixed up, skate boards are a horizontal laminate (think plywood) with wide piece of wood laminated on top of each other (the lines between the pieces run horizontal) wear as skis are a vertical laminate, with narrow strips of wood laminated side by side (the lines run vertically) 

horizontal laminates have been done before, unfortunately they often produce less consistent results as it is hard to find wood that has a similar density and grain across the whole piece due to stuff like knots and other grain variations. These imperfections are easier to avoid with a vertical laminate since it is easier to avoid knots and the like with thinner strips then with the wide pieces necessary for a horizontal laminate. The knots and grain imperfections in the wood cause the flex to be inconsistent and reduce the durability of the ski.   but if line wants to try it out good for them.

and wood side walls have been done before, that is nothing new.

If this is true, then it sounds pretty sick. However, if they are being constructed like a skateboard, it would be soooo dope if they had a little bit of concave. Look at Bataleon snowboards. They have what is called "Triple Base Technology" which is essentially concave on a snowboard. It supposedly makes getting on edge easier (easier turns) and it also makes it so that you are less likely to catch an edge while straightlining something. Plus it's super sick on rails.

It'd be an interesting concept to be applied to skis. I would definitely like to see a company come out with something similar to that.

i would also think that mounting bindings on a concave would be a little hard. unless the topsheet was flat and the bases were concaved. and it seems like that kind of technology would be better suited for powder skis...

i talked to a line product developer on the chair in vail and he gave me the rundown for all of next years skis and what they were changing, taking away, and adding to the fleet and there was nothing like this from what he told me...

im trying to think about how concave skis would help anything? would they be concave up so the edges are not touching? or concave down so both edges are touching with the center slightly raised?

concave would be like a skateboard. i think it would work in powder kind of like how a boats hull goes through the water. the edges wouldnt be touching the ground, but i cant really picture a ski with a ton of concave.
convex would be when the edges are touching but the middle of the base wouldnt be, if you were to flip a skateboard over and stand on what would normally be the bottom. it would channel the snow through the length of the ski.
i can understand the functionality of both but i think that they would be done very subtly. i heard a while ago that armada was trying something similar but i hadnt heard much more then that...

what about this:

a ski that is cambered and convex underfoot
and rockered with the rockers being concave.

you would be able to still carve pretty sharp turns (im guessing) and the butterability would be insane.

i dunno what his name was but he was riding mo'ships with dukes, he had on a green jacket and green hestra boronowski's and he also owned ep pros and blends. we rode up the blue sky basin chair at vail
i dunno if he's on ns, i doubt it, more of a tgr guy

i think to even consider dropping the invader, Line needs to have something even crazier and still around the same price... the invader is a huge seller for them obviously.... before and if they replace the invader with the experimental design i would hope they would produce the new ski for a season or two and see how it fairs

very true and yea LINE is always so innovative i love them, they are pushing the sport so much. I mean other companys are doing small shit but nothing like line. Butter zones, carbon ollie band, ture symetrical, those are all great innovations that i bet other companies wish they came up with.

I can't freakin wait til next years shit. Will brought some of next years skis into the shop where I work cause he needed them mounted up, I'm pretty sure they're taking the place of the invader, or the new invader or something. Sidewall ski. Sick sick graphic and looked like a ridiculous core. He said they were called "afterbangs" but really don't know if thats what the name really is. Also he said there's gonna be a new chronic thats like 90 underfoot and its gonna be the chronic "kryptonite" or something like that.
