Taken from powder magazine.
1. There's no avie danger It's bluebird.
2. Yea, we're prepared. We got a cell phone.
3. Patroller: "do you know what the avie danger is today?"
    Skier: "It wasn't too badlast time we shredded it."
4. "Backcountry gear? Yeah, this snowboard rips in the pow.
5. I would be wearing my transceiver but the batteries are dead.
6. (my personal favorite) We don't need beacons, shovels and probes. We're just going to film.
7. Beacon? My two friends and I have one. We trade it back and forth,
8. We have all that stuff. It's in the car. We arn't going to the top.
9. What difference does it make if I have my gear or not? I'm riding alone.
10. I was going to get a transceiver next paycheck, but my boy friend needs the money for a tat.
11.I've practiced. The guy at the store showed me how to find one in a trash can in the alley. I did it twice!

So yea ten of those were heard by the stevens pass patrol last year (powder mag made up one), and I just want to know which of you fucks are dumb enough to think any of that. And people wonder why somany people died in avalanches last year.

Funny yet sad.  I just don't go out of bounds because I don't have the gear, I do sidecountry stuff but nothing epic.

Ha, I entered that contest, I guessed they made up the one about trading beacons... thats just so stupid it blows my mind. Then again, a lot of those were incredibly stupid~

same idea applies. Aply BC, Stevens BC (grace lakes) Crystal BC, non of it is very controlled (crystals is pretty controlled though) and avies can happen at any time. I have seen both traverses at alpental taken out by a slide while the area is open.

The only slackcountry I did this year at Stevens was just off Chief int he trees to the left as your going up, and I never went very far at all. 

I learned my lesson at Baker back when I was a fucking stupid ass kid (like 14) and I skied out of bounds and almost got killed, really scary, got my pass pulled, then went to a little course thing and got it back.  I want to take some Avvy courses this year and stuff and hopefully buy some bc gear once I can afford it.

side note: the baker policy on pulling passes is the best I have ever heard of.  Cross the boundery with out necessary gear/knowledge/partner- pass pulled untill you take a class and learn stuff. Go to fast- pass pulled untill you do 4 hours of speed control, aka yelling at people to slow down at a slow sign.

funny thing is that i read on the teton forums about someone who was buried, and dug up luckily!!! less than 50 yards from the rope on the elbow at baker, so as said up there dont slack on slackcountry it can still swallow you. I beleive he was buried at about 250cm aswell ... make sure you got your guide probes people we got alot of snow.

I've never seen anyone in all my years other than patrol stand and yell at people for going too fast. I saw patrol do it once or twice on Easter and during Pres. weekend.

But I know a guy who last year was caught sharing the string to his season pass, and he had to do lift work for a whole day to get it back.

Sucks for him, but if that's a common place for it, that would explain why I've never seen anyone. Who rides the canyon on non-pow days anyways? A long skinny mogulshit ice chute is not a fun time :(

I remember last year seeing some kids who ducked the rope into canyon getting caught and having to work speed control on 7 for an entire epic pow day... Better than getting your pass cut but still.

So I suppose I'll need a beacon, probe, shovel, pack and whatever else I need to go into the BC at Baker this year.  So who all from ns who skis at Baker has BC gear?  Would it be a good idea to buy it this year, or will I find enough good stuff inbounds.  Cause I'm a poor college student and dropping like $400 on BC gear will make me almost in the negative money catagory.

You wouldnt have to spend 400 dollars, but if you have the knowledge and have some buddies (which I dont know how you couldnt) then id say its a great idea~

Take the classes at Baker, and then invest in some gear whenever you have the cash. Definately worth it in the long run.
Brian (mtbakerteacher), Colin (steez_nips), Dave (davethewave?), and I think Mitch (k2skipunk) were all in a couple classes last year. Good to know your shit.

Ya, I talked to Brian lastnight, that's kinda why I asked.  Cause I don't wanna have to stay inbounds if all of you guys are going somewhere cool in the BC or anywhere out of bounds.  I'll definitely take some classes at Baker this year.  My dad even said he might help pay for some stuff if I take classes and stuff.  I'll just say it makes my education more well rounded haha.

that $400 is gonna get you a bca tracker and a basic probe/shovel.  thats the minimum.

you can basically double that price if you get a mammut/pieps beacon and a snow study kit.

but that avy class = essential

If you are a WWU student, the outdoor center rents BCA trackers for the weekend for like 5 bucks. You could just rent the beacon and drop some $ on a good snowstudy kit and a decent pack and be set for the season

minimum you want a 240cm probe, but 300 is much better, just get a 300+cm probe, shovel needs to be metal, telescoping, and a fairly large blade, then you need a beacon, the Tracker is good and the cheapest, the beryovox is the best. Get a snow study kit and use it. also get a note book so you can record you observations for future reference, knowing how the snowpack has developed is very helpful. But yea take that class, and then some more. the more you know the better off you are.

If we're going out together into the BC, we're going to dig a big pit and use one kit...
Why would you need separate kits if your partner has one? Obviously you each need the essentials (beacon/probe/shovel ect.).

To the dude who told me they rent trackers: you are the fucking man, I'll just do that for now cause I'm poor.  I owe you one man, saved me a lot of money.

The class is. Haha you'll learn to get around town. It's easy to get from Lakeway to.. anywhere. You're right next to the freeway anyhow. Can't go wrong by following it!

no, i didnt take it, but dave did (skiingismyhotsex). Im taking one up at whitewater, since thats where most of my season is going to be spent. although, ill be back at baker for 3 weeks for christmas. iwanna shred with the baker bros and new baker bros.

but yea, definitely get a beacon, even inbounds this past season u needed one. and when u dont have it, and wanna ski the goods, well, you cant. shits weak.

also, if anyone wants to come ski some interior BC dry powpow, hit me up, u can stay at my place, and ski whitewater, in Nelson. and the other goods nelson has to offer ;) let me know if anyones down, and i can provide you with more info. id be more than happy to show a WA NS around here.as soon as i find my way around.

I will ski with you sammy.  I feel better skiing sketchier lines inbounds because i know they are already iced out by the time i get there so no need for sluff control

On a serious note-

For those of you who will be skiing out of bounds next year, I learned one main thing while skiing ob last year.  USE YOUR BRAIN.  I set off many small sluffing slides, and you just have to think before you drop.  Where's it gonna break?  Wheres the snow gonna go?  How big of a slab could it be?  Depth?  Width?  Length?  Can your friends see you?  Am I familiiar with the line?  The only slide that i got fucked up in was when friends and I dropped into the firs just mobbing without thinking.  It went from an epic constant pow faceshot when i couldnt see anything to  horrible washing mashine rolls and inhaling pow.  For people new to the backcountry next year, i could show you guys around a little bit.  Just let me know.  I am a freshman at western now so i bet i will see some of you guys around.
