What is the future of online advertising?

This is a question I've been mulling over for a long time now, and I'm interested to hear what people's thoughts are.

There's many different ways that it is being approached, but things are either 1)Pretty ineffective or 2) really annoying for the user.

The second approach you can see on something like www.ign.com - possibly one of the most obnoxious cases of online advertising I've ever seen.

The first approach you can see on something like Facebook, or just general non-annoying banner ads on any site, which will also be noted by something thats losing a lot of money. Fact of the matter is that shit like youtube, facebook and others are just bleeding money like they were shot in the chest with a cannon.

The best thing NS has ever done is the team and resort updates. Both of those are advertising, but its informitave, fun and a treat to look at.

Banner ads can be cool, but they barely catch your eye and there's a huge problem of "banner blindness"

Contests are awesome too, which is something we do.

Popups and rich media (shit flying around your screen) are super effective, but annoying as balls to the user.

Video ads are really cool, as long as used correctly. Long pre-roll makes me want to scratch my eyes out with a fork.

What are your guys thoughts? What would be a web advertising method that would be effective? Which types of ads do you like, and which do you hate? Why?

when i watched what his face (i own facebook) on cnn or something he was talking about turning wall posts into advertisements. so maybe like if every time someone says something about a company like a post of whatever that could be turned into an ad. but when i think about that that would seem impossible. but another idea would be to have a forum where every company that pays could have their own forum and the companies could put up as much stuff as they wanted about their new line and stuff. you could charge as you see fit or whatever. so kinda like the team and resort updates only a lot more interactive.

advertisements for shop sales, maybe like deal of the week from a featured shop

discounted passes would be dope

promo codes usually get people to click ads

maybe have advertiser accounts that they pay for so they can post updates and ad's for their company

i also think we should have like a small business ad corner with cheaper ad prices. i mean there is a lot of smaller businesses even if you charged them pretty cheaply you would still be bringing in some money.

the site needs scrilla so they would need ads from other things then skiing and i dont mind seeing baloo telling me to take my vitamins and read books

on a serious note, the little videos at the start of vids arent bad if they make sense within 10 seconds and the banner ads are alright they catch my attention

lots of sites have that already, a program will scan text for keywords then highlight/underline those words and have them link to other sites (generally online stores)

for example if i were talking about k2 skis the program would recognize k2 and skis and link them to an appropriate site

Personally i think that only ski or sport banners really work here, like the coc, line, all the shops etc work. Those are also not annoying and in some cases even informative. Tho I also see a banner on the botom of this sate for if i wanna live in the us.

Wtf has that to do on this site? You really think i read this website with the idea of moving to the us. If so i would def not be looking on this site for info... And so its def not effective!

I worked on a contest where people earned an invitation to an 'Exclusive Test Drive Event' for a new car by posting links relevant to the car on the contest site. Other people interested in the car would check out these links, submit their own links, and get excited about seeing how popular their links were.

The guys who shared the most popular links (and met a bunch of other criteria) were invited to the test drive where they could take the car out on a race course, chat with race driving instructors about the car, get a thorough tour of the car's features, and just plain feel like a VIP for a few hours.

The banner ads on the campaign didn't even try to promote the car. They promoted the contest. The contest promoted the car by letting people actually drive it. I can't think of a better way to sell a car.

I'd love to see ads on here promoting demo days or sales. If I'm interested in a product, I've probably read everything about it already, so I'm not going to click an ad for more info. If I can get an awesome deal on the product or a chance to try it out, I'm much more interested.

Dude thats a fucking SICK idea for a contest!

Your'e right thought that contests, trying the product and keeping things relevant are key. We notice that too in click rates, ads that are of interest get like 30X the clicks of other ones.

I wish companies were willing to kick the cash that it takes to make your creative game banners. Quaz here built a couple of ideas, but we haven't been able to find someone with the cash to throw at development just yet.

Those banners are super sick, the ones where there's a fun little game in them or some shit.

'tis unfortunate that the ski industry isn't as rich as the automotive industry. On the other hand, I'd hate buying skis if it was like buying a car.

Wall.E was pimping Mac product. Sticking an iPod in a movie that takes place 700 years in the future is pretty desperate, but the audience loved the Mac bootup sound. I think relatively subtle (or at least non-invasive) advertising will have a place in the future too. Just not horribly blatant product placement.

Along the lines of that, I'm hoping to get some real skis and gear into Gnarshmallow (blatant ad - http://gnarshmallow.com/). I'm not sure how well riding real skis in a little game would directly drive sales, but it can't hurt for brand awareness.
