Telecom Immunity Sanctioned.

This is a pretty bad deal for the USA.

The Senate just voted down the Dodd / Feingold amendment, which would have stripped telecom immunity from the FISA bill. The bill as it stands makes all telecom companies retroactively immune from legal action for their participation in illegal wiretapping and surveillance of American citizens.

Senator Chris Dodd on the outcome of the vote: "We’ve just sanctioned the single largest invasion of privacy in American history.”

Maybe its just me but this seems like it is a pretty important and debatable topic, yet it only has 30 views and 4 posts....hmmm...compared to the other threads it ain't shit.

However, I'm really happy that the government will be spending a lot of money to listen to my all important conversations with my friends.

I believe initially it will only be copyrighted material. The legistlation is supposed to be unveiled next week.

This whole process is so gradual that no one stands up for any particular action. Its like cooking a frog in hot water. Turn it up slow, and it just sits inside, waiting to be boiled alive.

i actually have no problem with retroactive sanctions. i imagine there was a pretty huge incentive for the phone companies to comply... i think as long as it's NEVER done again... which i'm sure is an absurd notion... then OK. I do agree generally with Chris Dodd and it was a shame he couldn't make it further with his presidential run. Good things would happen... good things.

starting now everyone when they answer the phone should say bomb instead of hello.  so the whole system will be listening to useless conversations and eventually overload itself.  sort of like in casino when deniro and pesci had their wives talk bullshit on the phone, so that the fbi would flick off before they got down to business.

Sorry, but in Canada they don't even put on a charade to pretend that you are or ever were sovereign Citizens. They do this shit to you all as well, but don't bother to actually bring the issue up for any kind of debate or exposure.

Again I am confused. The Queen has no practical authority. Also the US judiciary does not have the power to nullify legislation.

The Queen has ALL practical authority over Canada when she chooses to exercise it. Who does your Prime Minister answer to? The Governor General. Who does she answer to? The Queen of England. No, she doesn't interfere as long as the status-quo remains and the Royal Family retain their privelidged status. But how long, even with popular parliamentary support, do you think a Prime Minister would last if he tried to break all ties to the crown?

You live under a monarchy that allows you a parliamentary democracy. When it is convienient.

Um, the Canada Act of 1982? Read it. Most of the larger members of the Commonwealth have undergone patriation, including Australia, and Canada.
