Maybe taking a vacation to Crystal with my gf

Aight so my girlfriend said it would be fun if we went to Crystal for a few days this winter break.  We are both 18, I'm in hs she's in college.   We both live on Whidbey so we wanna go far enough away but not out of state.  So does anyone know of some cheap but good places to stay up there, or any way I can get cheaper lift tickets?  We'll probably ski 2 days up there.  My girlfriend said the town was nice or something and she's not a huge skier but she wants to ski 4 or 5 times this year with me.  Does Crystal have a park at all?  and how is the mountain in general?  Looks like they have some good cliffs and stuff from the new lift.  I'll probably be skiing with her mostly so I won't be shreddin the gnar but I still wanna be able to take some runs on legit terrain cause I won't be with her the whole time.  I usually ski Stevens cause I have a pass there but I get out to Colorado (summit county) and/or Whistler once a year so comparisons to those places would be good.

so:

places to stay- inexpensive, but not some shitty ass motel.

lift tickets- can anyone get me a discount or know where I can get one?

general mtn. info..park?

stuff to do besides ski there?

We'll be there for either 2 or 3 nights.  I should probably let my parents know about this.....

There are a few places to stay right at the mountain, won't be cheap though, or super nice, but nice enough.  I stayed up there for a weekend like 10 years ago, it was fun.

Lift tickets are balls at Crystal, some $60 or something for a day pass.

No park, hasn't been one for maybe 10 years at least.  But thats ok, cause the mountain is huge, there is a lot of terrain, and its really varied.  Lots of options for a beginner, and a lot for a more advanced skier.  As much as people bash on Crystal, its still one of my favorite mountains to ski.

Ya I haven't ever been there and my girlfriend said she wanted to go so I figure I'd check it out and the terrain looked legit.  I ran into problems finding a place to stay.  It is either too expensive or you have to be 21 or over.

Is there anywhere else I should check out maybe in Oregon, Idaho, or western Montana?
Baker is not an option as of now.  I'd prefer a resort with high speed lifts and a good park because I doubt I'll do a ton of hard charging on this vacation.  A nice town is also important as this is not just a ski trip, we will probably do other stuff too.  Maybe go on a hike or something.

To be quite frank, you could probably go to Whistler for about the same as, say, Crystal. Yea, the dollar doesn't help anymore, infact it stings a little, but overall, the condos and stuff can be very reasonable if you shop around ahead of time and avoid the peak seasons where it is wicked expensive (such as winter break/christmas/new years). And usually there are different ways to get discounted lift tickets up there. Not to mention it is Whistler.

Most of the accommodation places say you have to be like 25 years old to book, but if you give whatever company runs the place a call (say ResortQuest or Whistler Retreats) and you are courteous and ask nicely, basically have the policy in hand, say it's just like two of you,  they will totally let that fly

Well I've spent the entire period in my computer class looking at places.  I think mid Jan. would be a better time to go so I'll search around.  Sun Peaks might be a good choice too.  I'll just search around but what I'm looking for is:

high speed lifts
nice town (other stuff to do besides ski)
not too expensive
able to get discounted tickets
preferably have a park

I've been to Sun Peaks and Big White too and those might be good places to go.

Why is Baker not an option?  Not any nice towns nearby, but there are no nice towns near Crystal either.... Enumclaw is closest..... gross.

I would say Whistler as well.  You can find cheap places, and the village is actually a cool/romantic place to be despite skiing.

you could stay in hood river and ride hood, no idea on pricing and shit. or bend and bachelor, chill town, park, only 6 hr drive...

Yea, I'm thinking stay at Hood River, ski at Meadows will be the cheapest option, but of course there is the drive to and from the mountain. B.C. interior is generally cheaper than whistler during peak season, but Whistler is still Whistler (you get the town, mountains and park), and it generally gets cheaper the further from late December you go.

Alright I'd probably go either Valentines day/presidents day weekend, or like mid January.  Thanks for the help guys.  Whistler would good but it always seems really expensive.  I'll look around a bit more and consult with the gf.

Since your girl is not to into skiing I would say Baker is not the right choice. unless your into steep powder  and more 'hardcore' skiing it is a shitty mountain. I would say your looking for a mountain that is more structured like Crystal. At 18 Whistler would not be as good as it could. Despite what some of my friends think about it. I think Schweitzer would be a great fit for what you want. As long as your no to obsessed about the quality of a park, it is a fun mountain. It is not as crowded as Whistler of Crystal. It has more of a village then Crystal does with some nice places to eat. (been a few years so my knowledge of it's base is a little week) It also has good 'on mountain' lodging. I don't know about how much it will cost so just look it up, but otherwise I think it could be just what your looking for.

Crystal is out of the question now.  schweitzer might be cool but somewhere in Canada might be easierand cheaper, I dunno, I still gotta look around

You could always do a stay and do things in Vancouver, and ride at Grouse sort of thing. But you get a lot of city, and close urban skiing.

Big white (and a lot of the interior in general) is money, but it sounds like you've been there much more recently than I have (its been like... 13 years since Ive been there). In january/february its cheaper than Whistler.

I guess there are so many options that I keep throwin shit out there

It's pretty small, but Silver mountain isn't bad.  It's not too expensive and there's a cute little lodge at the base of the gondola.  Schweitzer is awesome too, and Sandpoint is an enjoyable town.  If you can make it down to Bachelor, Bend or Sunriver are awesome places to stay and you can usually find something decently priced.

Ya, it looked like it would have some good cliffs and steeps, but like I said, this won't be my BC vacation this year.  I'll probably be skiing easy ish runs cause I don't think my girlfriend is that good, so a park woul dbe fun to fuck around it.  I'll probably end up skiing hella groomers switch on Bacons or something weird like that haha.

Heh, I've never owned a ski fatter than 85 before so it will be new to me.  I'll be keepin it real with some fatties though which should be fun.  I'll have Anthems too which will probably be better suited to that but I hear Bacons ride really well switch.

whatever you do, do NOT spend all day doing rails and jumps while your girlfriend skis down the side and watches you.  She may say she enjoys watching, but that is NOT romantic.  Forget the park, and snowplow along with her, she'll appreciate it.

Yeah dude I know that.  I am definitely NOT going to do that.  I doubt she will want to ski all day and it's not much to ask to go have a few laps in the park during the course of a 3 day trip.  And she won't mind watching a little bit, but this tip is mostly for US rather than just me or her so there's gotta be multiple things to do besides ski as well.

you don't want to ski at a level way higher then hers. if she is skiing a groomer, and enjoying it, but the steep parts are a little hard for her don't do it switch, and don't push her to do anything. she won't like that. even if she asks you to do a switch 10 and you can, don't. do a 3 instead.

thanks for the great advice bud.

Anyway not that I owe you a fucking explanation or anything but we both live on Whidbey Island and she goes to a community college in Everett area and will be going there this year and next year because the university she wants to go to is private and she can't afford all 4 years there at 45k a year.  So I really don't think I'll run into a lot of problems.

and no, the trip is not just for her.  If it was just for her it wouldn't involve skiing at all probably. 

So let's keep all your guys genius relationship advice the fuck out of my thread, if I had problems I'd go to ladies men, and if you can't handle it then just don't post here k.  I wanna kinda focus on places to go...as for the people who have had suggestions about that already, thank you.

You should go to Meadows or up to Canada... Anyways I'm a Crystal local, these kids don't know what their talking about. Your gonna probably wanna stay at the Snorting Elk Inn because its cheap but still not a shit hole. Lift tickets are very expensive but I'm a season pass holder so I don't know exactly how much it costs, but a ticket book which has 5 tickets in it so its cheaper. Theres a new chairlift that has been added which we are all excited for. It was put in north back or Northway. And there isn't a park at Crystal except the secret park... Hit me up if you want a bc booter. And things to do besides skiing at Crystal is... Well you can ski and sled I guess or make a baby

Is your girl 19?  If so definately go to Canada.  I've been to sun peaks, and its alright, it doesn't have the most challenging terrain, it's definately a family oriented place.  But nice lodging for reasonable prices, and a village that has all the essentials(liquor store).  I didn't see a park,  but it was snowing the whole week I was there.

Forget about whistler if you're thinking winter break, I doubt you'll find a room for cheap.  January 18th is college weekend, it will be very hard to find a room too, but discounted lift tickets and hella drunk kids runnin around(myself included this year) so it's always a good time.  Plus I think the liquor store there stays open 24 hrs?  Not positive about that.  Watch out for the mounties though.

No worries.  She won't be 19 till August.  I'm thinking going February possibly.   Whistler would be good.  I'll probably bring some of my own alcohol and then I'm sure I can find somebody to buy some for me wherever I go if I need more.  I don't plan on needing too much  but  a fair amount.
