WTB: VX1000 or Other

Dude, of course Ebay is legit, just check the sellers feedback rating and number of sales to make sure you're buying from a reputable business person.

The audio circuitry on the VX1000 is garbage, the colour is OK, the low light performance is quite good. But again, the sound is bad.

Get a Panasonic DVX100a (check www.dvxuser.com) or a Canon XL1-s or even a Canon XL2 (standard 20x optical zoom could be useful for ski stuff?).

Pana DVX is IMO the best of the best for people who don't need HD (yet). You can put your shit on the big screen without getting laughed at with that camera. I don't really know how much you know about this sort of stuff already so I'm not gonna pretentiously wade into the specs but trust me, it owns the vx1000 in more ways than one.

If you can't find a DVX for $1000, it also has a little brother which would also destroy a VX1000... actually can't remember the model name but you'll know it if you see it.

As I see it, the VX1000 is just the very "best" consumer camera available, it's made for soccer mums who have too much money, there's nothing truely pro about it.

Pana HVX200 is really what you should be looking at, that's my next camera :p

It's about US$6000. It's a weapon though, way ahead of it's times. Look at it this way, George Lucas paid something like $150,000 for the Varicam he used to make Star Wars only a few years ago and the HVX is very almost in the same league (when used correctly).

It records to flash memory (or tape) so it takes the pain out of capturing footage, it can record at 60FPS PROGRESSIVE HD, this means that it does the shizzle slow mo hd which is really what it's all about. Well it will be in a few years, just you wait and see.

there is also a panasonic dvc-30 and a panasonic dvc-80, but i think that the DVX is wayy out of his price range, but if i were you i would look at VX1's, saving up a little more and get a VX2, canon GL1, save up a little more and get a GL2, and also the panasonic dvc-30/80.

just look at those and see what seems best for you, i dont know if your only going to be shooting skiing, at night, etc.
