You didn't like Borat, and now this?
That looks like sheer, unadulterated entertainment.

Haha. Your memory is way too good man.
Borat turned out to be a lot smarter than I thought it would be. If you think about it it wasn't a funny movie, it was an exposition of how pathetic the American social consciousness had become. Borat without the meta-plot of cultural identity extraction, would be pointless an silly. Whether the perception of this plot line was conscious or not, it is the reason why people think it was so good. Its like being able to recognize a powerful piece of art, but not understanding why its engaging your emotions.
Pirates on the other hand is simply stupid. The first movie was good. Just simple, entertaining, Hollywood junk food, but nothing to be critical of. The second film however was pure rubbish. There were 3 billion subplots and none of them made any progress; it was just a giant pile of confusion. It was the only movie I've ever felt compelled to walk out of because it was so obvious that they made the movie as a $14 interlude between 1 and 3. They had no plot, terrible screenplay, and worse acting that production covered up with special effects and pretty faces.
As for Pirates 3, cant you just feel them straining desperately for a plot? I mean come on, monsters of the deep allying with the British Royal Navy to destroy the world of Piracy...are you serious? The dumbest part is that we're supposed to sympathize with Johny Depp as the protagonist, which has totally destroyed his character as the promiscuous, pseudo-schizophrenic imp, which was a much more interesting character.
I just think its really dumb thats all. I'm sure the graphics will be great, and I'm sure most people will enjoy the illusion of witty dialouge, but for me, i just cant figure out why i should care about these characters or their bizzare battle for the fate of...what are they fighting for again.

No, i just like good movies. We've come to tolerate the shit that Hollywood churns out because society has forgotten how incredibly compelling good cinema can be.
Pirates 3 is junk food: you pay for it, eat it, and shit it out 10 minutes after its over.

I see what you're getting at Nelson, but like it was stated earlier, its not a movie you are supposed to anatomize very deeply, or at all for that matter. Its just strait up mainstream Hollywood entertainment. Its the same reason why people like zombie flicks. Yeah the plots suck and the acting sucks blah blah but they are still fucking entertaining because even for us people who are into deeper movies, these mainstream ones allow us to turn off our brains and watch the mindless action commence.

Best movie I've seen recently was Memento. I had to write a paper drawing parallels between the protagonist and Locke's theory of Identity. It's a brilliant film, for those of you that haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
Koyaniskatzi is another perennial favorite, but can be a bit inaccessible for the casual viewer.
Now to you're point Tanaka, I understand that Pirates Isn't intended to be a thought provoking, intelligent piece of cinema. That said, I see Pirates as a particularly poor manifestation of mindless entertainment. Casino Royale, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones all fit into the junk-food category but have focused plots, interesting characters, and compelling screenplay. Pirates is a cheep ramble, full of nothing but pointlessness. The plot doesn't make sense, the character relationships don't make sense, and the whole thing feels like they tricked you into paying to watch.
I have nothing against mindless action, sometimes its cool. Its when they dress up something really stupid with pseudo-intelligent dialouge...that grinds my gears.

Star Wars was one of the greatest series of movies in the 70's, I don't see how it was 'Junk-food' kind of movie, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off was hilarious.

they are very mainstream movies. Intelligent movies do not fall under this catagory because most people are too dumb to comprehend these films. The ones that require almost no thinking and everything is blatently explained right there is aimed more towards the masses, because they just want to be entertained, and nothing else.

Which is what movies are made for, entertainment. Star Wars revolutionized movies.

yes but different people have a different idea of entertainment. Some like a mind fucker that makes them think for the next 5 years (donnie darko) while others like shitty 5th grader jokes (white chicks)
That is just an extreme example showing the difference but you see what I'm getting at, right?

I'm not saying this is an either/or situation though. There can be really good dumb movies though. I'd put Casino Royale in that category; it wasn't intellectually challenging but it had focus, compelling locations, and above average screenplay. There's no genius there, its just well produced. In an analogous sense I find Justin Timberlake impressive. He's a damn good dancer, decent vocalist, and reasonably attractive human being. His marketing, his production, and his general PR work is PHENOMENAL, and I give him kudos for that.
I don't mean Junk food in a negative sense, its just a metaphor for easily consumable, and concurrently uttterly forgettable entertainment.

i'm sure it will. Spider man is just a sappy pile of crap. He's all depressed and emo and hes like, "it feels so good". He pisses me off.
Pirates will be great, the intro is basically #2, so it'll be all action. Gonna see it right away

Vanilla Sky (the only tom cruise movie I like)
Brick (fucking brilliant indie film)
Lucky # Slevin (clever dialogue)
28 Days Later (the cinematography was actually amazing)
The Science of Sleep
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry has a unique style that I crave. They are filmed with a mix between a very "reality show" style and a cinematic style sense that further places you in the scenario. His films are about the anatomy of the human mind which I totally love.)

best example of mindless entertainment: Zathura. One of my favorite movies ever and it involved no advanced thinking (unless you consider the potential time travel abilities black holes have, but even in this film thats pretty basic still)
