Buying Stolen Skis on NS.

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
We recently had an issue where a pair of stolen skis were placed on here for sale. The situation has been rectified. However, this is a big problem. I personally think capital punishment is an appropriate punishment for these people, and I consider anyone who helps them profit from stealing skis just as bad as they are. I know some of you might be willing to overlook what a huge asshole it makes you as long as you get your hundred dollar Armadas. So I'm going to put this another way.
Thanks to NS's authorization logs, I have all the information I need to find out who's involved in these transactions. I can find out anything I want about your account. Absolutely anything. As for this past incident, I know who was interested in buying the stolen items and I'll be contacting them. If I want to, I can find out who you know, where you're from, where you ski. So if you're one of these people who supports ski theft, just be aware you'll be caught. We'll make sure of it. Buying stolen merchandise, which you know is stolen, amounts to complicity in the theft. That means it's illegal. At best, you've just given your hundred odd dollars away to some asshole and the skis will go back to their owner. At worst, you've now got problems with the police. And no one wants that. So just re-read the first sentence of this post. It's not worth it.

Yeah, that is really what this thread should be about, rather than Mods threatening to be Judge and exicutioner here.

Wasn't aware you were even selling skis. You're legit though, because people know who you are. No way could you get away with anything. Same thing goes for me and most of NS... it's the shady random people who worry me most.

Word, That thread was uber sketch right from the beginning, and once I saw the TGR post I was 99% sure that they were the same skis.
People that steal gear should be tortured the way POW victims are, or worse.
Everyone needs to just stay alert for this type of thing, and for God's sake use common sense, if a deal is too good to be true - particularly one from a member with one post that joined that same day - it probably is.

not trying to be a douche but how can you guys find out where someone lives, like its easy enough to know their ip but dont most isps have a privacy policy, meaning only the police can force them to reveal where the person in question accessed the internet?
but yeah props on cracking down on ski crime, its fucking low to steal someones hard earned gear. i'd be incrediably pissed off is someone stole my skis. def gonna be looking at a lock this winter
maybe you guys could have some policy where only donators can advertise gear to sell? post count would be another way but then theres still the posibility that someone will just post a bunch of random shit to build up their count. bloody minority ruining things for the majority. and skiers are supposed to be chill. stealing isn't cool

Also, if you ever want to find if someone has a buy or sell history, check the NSTOR file. Its linked at the top of every recent page of the good buyer/seller thread thats stickied.

its simple even if they have a privacy policy any mod. can report that he's selling the stolen skis over the internet then the police get the address from the internet company using the ip address that NS. gives them then bam the dirtbag gets to meet bubbah

i honestly dont see how kids can be so ignorant to buy a pair of skis of of someone over the net...when they reatil for 500.00ish and they are going for 100.00 shipped...USE YOUR HEADS BUYERS...like J.D already said...if things seem to good to be true...then they most likley are.
always look into if something is hot or if it is legitament. it is hard over the net i agree but as a buyer, you should have the conscious to know when something isnt right.

I was just about to say that..
My parents would be like where the fuck did you get those skis? But some kids parents just get drunk all the time so it wouldn't really be an issue for 'em.
As for locking my skis, I do it all the time. Once only one was locked securely and I got back to find one ski out. I think they tried to take them but they couldn't get the other so they left. And I read somewhere that separating skis doesn't always work, someone could be watching and see what you do. That freaked me out. Someone watching me lock my skis. I've gotten bad feelings about people hanging out around the racks and sometimes I'll stay for a minute or two to see whats up.

creeps are creepy. I'd probably have a lock if it was easy to use, but usually if i'm outside in the cold at the racks, i have my gloves on. Can you use locks with gloves on?

uhm on ebay at the beginning of the season i was gonna get dumonts for 300 with bindings when they were retail like 700 just for the skis.. but they were legit not even mounted skis it was just a killer deal. that ended up falling through cause he was a douchebag.. so i mean how can we really know as buyers unless we just refuse everygood deal we see because we believe it could be stolen. i think maybe we should have alot of people making threads on shit being stolen so that we have something to base the sales on and be like hey uhm some guy just got brand new line chronics with brand new salomon 429i bidings stolen.. and theres a dude selling a set of those for 200....ya know wat im sayin

That in itself is an ignorant thing to say, in plenty of cases on NS people sell skis, outerwear, accessories, that retail for 5x or more the amount they are being sold at. The kid may just b in need of money, want the shit of there hands, etc.
I have seen plenty of pairs of new 200$ snowpants going for 50
400$ skis going for 100$
Most of the time stuff is legit, we cant be setting price minimums on stuff we buy. We just need to research it.

skis have serial numbers on them so maybe everyone should take a note of what their number is.. then if its stolen you've got a definite record of your skis. if similar skis are seen for sale on here you could request a pic of the s/n if not get the mods involved

thats true, it definitly can't be judged as a whole but rather as individual cases like if someone got somthing stolen and a newb with 1-2 posts is selling that exact thing then its obvious, we just need to just watch out and be cautious about who we buy from and to make sure he's legit kid and dont just make the assumption that because they are cheap that they are stolen just ask the kid a ton of questions so that your 100% sure its good. Also if a case of stolen shit arises i think all mods need to do is check pm's and if theres any evidence that the gear is stolen and the buyer knows it then go after him, otherwise nofify the buyer before the dealer, and once the buyer gets the address just have the police deal with it

Its one of the low points of society, but its also a fact of life. I for one, am now scared shitless of buying skis off here or anywhere else thats not retail, cause if somebody puts a legit price on something (not like new ARV's for 200) its almost impossible to know.
Something tells me that being a reputable seller is going to become more important.

Yeah. thats because the Mods came out with the freak attack. they should relax a little instead of spoiling it.
Now if somebody even wants to get rid of a pair of skis that they just dont want anymore and hook up a fellow newschool memeber they are worried about the mods jumping down their throats. Not to mention the poor kid looking to buy it.

Nice deleting my post. Just cause i stated the fact that no police investigation will come of someone reporting that so and so stole skis and is trying to sell them on the internet. Anyone who buys stolen shit will not get it taken way because NO ONE knows whose it is. Im not saying stealing is a good thing, id prob break the guys legs but who is to say, what is stolen and what is not. It just cant be done.

I find when there are sales with alot of new stuff, with tags, I assume its stolen. There are people on here who have a sale every other day, and its almost all new stuff. Im not accusing them, but it makes me think, where the hell do you get all of this? I assume that they stole it. Thats a primary reason I dont buy much of anything off on NS. I would hate to buy smoething that a member stole. Im fueling thier habit, and breaking the law myself. It also hurts the consumers. shoplifting, or stealing PERIOD is wrong. Your should be ashamed of yourself if the thought even crosses your mind.

Dude a lot of people are hooked up in the industry on this site so they have a lot of goods. And there are a milion other reasons why they could still have stuff with tags.
I just wouldnt go assuming people are guilty, there are some great deals out there.

having my skis stolen was a blessing in disguise
i had rossignol rebels(shitty non-twintip rental-like skis)
it gave me an excuse to get my first pair of twins
but if anybody steals my skis now ill be crackin open the 'ol gun safe

Yea, but it is a possibility that the person you stole the skis off is frequent here at Newschoolers, and may notice his skis are up for sale, and contacts an admin.
