Buying Stolen Skis on NS.

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

We recently had an issue where a pair of stolen skis were placed on here for sale. The situation has been rectified. However, this is a big problem. I personally think capital punishment is an appropriate punishment for these people, and I consider anyone who helps them profit from stealing skis just as bad as they are. I know some of you might be willing to overlook what a huge asshole it makes you as long as you get your hundred dollar Armadas. So I'm going to put this another way.

Thanks to NS's authorization logs, I have all the information I need to find out who's involved in these transactions. I can find out anything I want about your account. Absolutely anything. As for this past incident, I know who was interested in buying the stolen items and I'll be contacting them. If I want to, I can find out who you know, where you're from, where you ski. So if you're one of these people who supports ski theft, just be aware you'll be caught. We'll make sure of it. Buying stolen merchandise, which you know is stolen, amounts to complicity in the theft. That means it's illegal. At best, you've just given your hundred odd dollars away to some asshole and the skis will go back to their owner. At worst, you've now got problems with the police. And no one wants that. So just re-read the first sentence of this post. It's not worth it.

I'm going to give you some credit and assume you know what I meant and are just being a smartass for the hell of it. But in case I'm wrong, the incident is over with. The issue is still a problem. I hope it does get long and a lot of people read it, because, for future reference, people should know what will happen if they participate in these kinds of transactions.

well did the people know they were buying shit that was stolen or what? I did not see the thread but if the people just thought they were getting a good deal then it seams unfair to go affter them.

No idea. If they don't know, it's not their fault per se. But if you suspect something is stolen, don't buy it, because it's not worth the risk. If you're TOLD it's stolen and you buy it anyway because it's a good deal, well... all I'm saying is, you're going to regret it.

i dont know if that was the case for this. but it seems pretty dumb to tell people, "HEY, i stole this! want to buy it off me for cheap!" it doesnt seem very likely that that would happen

Yeah, I dont think anybody is going to buy something that they know is stolen, especially over the internet which is sketch to begin with at times.
I just dont know how you are going to know if the individual knows that they are buying stolen goods. I would just hate for an innocent kid to get screwed becuase somebody "thinks" they know that the kid knows he is buying stolen skis.

Are you people serious? People report stolen skis. Skis show up on NS. People attempt to buy said skis. Someone mentions they're stolen. Someone buys them anyway.

This is the situation in question here. And yes, it happens.

Yeah, but how do you know that the kid that buys them doesnt know they are stolen? I am just saying that it can get out of hand I think for people that purchase and dont know that they are stolen. We have to watch playing the police here and taking it too far.
It sounds like a good idea but it just sounds like power can be abused (mods) and people can get punished for an innocent mistake.

I don't much care. If you didn't know, that really sucks, because you just paid for skis that are going to be taken from you and given back to the guy they were stolen from. If you did, you could be in worse trouble. That's how it works. Please understand that the focus here is not on "what ifs", it's on making it as difficult as possible to sell stolen property on here.

Stolen skis suck, they are a hassle and are a pain to the person who had them stolen, I was accused of stealing skis and i was threatened with either going to jail (no joke) or paying a 600$ fine, basically DONT DO IT, let alone try to sell some

Oh and by the way i didnt steal shit, the skis they thought i stole were bought but the persons intitials were still on the skis

ohh I think I remember what skis this was about. that sucks, I think i'm gonna rock a ski lock next year or somethin cuz i would flip if my shit got stolen. woulda helped to explain that the people who bought the skis you're talkin about new they were stolen though that makes a pretty big difference. definately a good thing to crack down on.

i totally agree with this i would never buy shit that i know for a fact is stolen and i didnt see the thread or the person who did it but im gonna keep cautious cuz i would hate to see my skis that got stolen sold to some kid for 1/3rd or what i paid for them

Yeah he thought I wanted to buy the ants cuz i messaged the cocksucker trying to off them. I was curious if they were indeed the same pair that Brian had ganked from him on TGR. If they were, I was hoping to allow Brian a chance to meet the kid to "buy" his skis back. Never heard back, so im watching SLC's craigslist.

seperating skis works well too, thats what i do no one really takes the time to shuffle through all of the skis, especially if the racks are 50 yards apart, but yeah stealing shit is gay, ive had 3 of those 100 dollar calculators stolen this year, all out of my locker which is locked, and they stole my lock too....mad gay

Why would anyone steal skis. Kids spend all summer working just so they can by their dream setup and someone just comes along and steals it. Seriously if you steal skis wouldn't you feel insanely guilty about ruining some kids season? I mean that's really low.

Stealing skis is lower than low. Selling stolen skis is, again, lower than low. And KNOWINGLY buying stolen skis is just as bad as stealing them yourself, if not worse.

We should, as a website, be doing everything we can to stop ski theft, as well as the sale of stolen items. All available tools should be used, including any/all authorities.

But please, don't be jackasses about it. If some kid sees a smoking deal (say, $200 ANTs) and thinks "jeez, I want some ANTs, there's no outward signs of these being stolen, and shit, a deal's a deal", don't go pressing charges. The kid might have been an idiot as far as grabbing a "too good to be true" deal, but if he/she had no idea the stuff was stolen, they're not thiefs, they're just looking for a good deal. Yes, the skis should be shipped back, and yes, they'll probably lose the money, but they don't deserve having authorities investigate them.

We need to take care of our own here. Thieves need to be stopped, but shit, those kids who are unknowningly buying stolen gear do NOT deserved to get snitched on passed giving the gear back to the rightful owners and maybe losing the money they spent on it.

Some kid with one day on here and one post had a pair of 06 ANT's that had been mounted twice. He posted them up here for $125 with no pictures and a weak description.  I believe it was JD that mentioned that someone on TGR had a pair stolen that had a total of two mounts. I assume that JD then contacted the person on TGR and gave him the heads up.

Sounds right?

Well if we do all the work for them and tell them where to find the asshole, of course they'll go deal with it. They're required to. If I hate theives enough to do this for free, don't you think someone who makes a living enforcing the law would be just as eager? Most of them are. Don't worry. They'll be glad to help.

I don't want to give anyone the impression that THAT's the policy here... a lot of it will be a judgment call: there are cases where it'd be understandable that someone wouldn't know they were stolen, and then there are "This year's Seth Pistol, good cond, mounted once, 150$". Unfortunately, if you're one of these kids who thinks they're just getting a good deal and genuinely isn't aware that they're buying stolen stuff, you STILL get the shaft because your 200$ goes to some shithead and your new skis go back to their rightful owner, and you don't get your money back unless they catch said shithead, which can be hard because thieves are good at covering themselves, as was the guy today. The point of this thread is simply that ski theft hurts everyone, and we'll do whatever we can to make it more difficult to profit from it. Right now it's way too easy, and a big part of that is the people who look the other way, so to speak, because they're getting a good deal. It's in every decent human being's interest to discourage this kind of behaviour.
