Bamboo skis?

i was thinking the other day and it hit me like a ton of bricks. it would be totally sick if there were skis with bamboo cores. as far as i know only liberty has made them with bamboo sidewalls but i might be wrong. anyways if you think im crazy heres some facts about bamboo.

it is harder than maple or oak and has much greater dimensional stability than either of these hardwoods. it doesnt shrink or expand as much as wood. the amount of pulling force it can withstand before breaking is greater than steels. its compressive strength is comparable to concrete and its weight to strength ratio is greater than graphite.

bamboo grows wicked fast. it has been clocked at growing 2 inches an hour! this means it can be harvested much faster than trees. also its a grass so it can be harvested without killing it. the plant will send up more and bigger stalks the next growth cycle.

The only problem is that the inside is hollowish... so it's kinda hard to get a decent board.

Actually, Nevermind that, skis are laminated anyway so having smaller pieces isn't a problem.

as far as i know it didnt work too well for ninthward because they had to mulch the bamboo. so it was basicly equivellent to a foam core. could be very wrong

Kingswood makes bamboo skis, and so does on3p.  Talk to iggyskier if you're really interested in a pair, I know I'm really looking forward to getting mine!

Liberty skis for 07-08 have bamboo in the cores, as well as some of the sidewalls.

there are some skis out there with bamboo in the core i am not sure it is is full bamboo

the libertys have bamboo inserts

high society have some i think

but i would like to see how a full bamboo ski would be
my long board is full bamboo it is less flexy but more snappy then a normal wood long-board

The Rookie from Ninthward has had a bamboo/ poplar core for about 2 seasons now... skis are off the wall.

Kingswood has been using bamboo for their cores for what....three or four years now.  There is another french company that uses bamboo cores in their skis as well. then the ninthward pair, liberties and DP uses bamboo sidewalls....I am using bamboo cores and sidewalls in my skis as well.  Not something new, but a lot of people are starting to pick up on it.

I loved the Kwoods I had so that is why I decided to go with bamboo for my cores.

When i went to summer camp the bunkbead that me and Amanda had was bamboo. It wasn't poppy though so I don't see why it would be goods in skies.

the reason its not too popular right now, is its insainly expensive and difficult to get hold of quality chutes. just cause its a new idea to use it as a replacement for wood (in N America at least). However, as it becomes more popular, which it will, it will pop up in alot more applications, and id be willing to be it becomes a major worldwide resource.

that being said, bamboo is a sick material when used right. it literally is a natural carbon fiber. however, if its not used right, its no better than traditional woods, if not worse.

Craig Calfee builds bamboo and hemp bikes, they are just as light as carbon frames, ride better than steel bikes, and look cooler than ANYTHING else.
