Making Your Own Skis

So yeah, I go to this high school. Now for senior year you can do a senior project. I think I'd like to make a pair of skis. It would be challenging..but I think I might be able to do it. Does anyone really know whats inlvolved?

some of the materials might be hard to find if you're not buying them in bulk. I'll send you a message, I've looked into this quite a bit.

dont you need a ski press? and if you live reasonably close to the line factory im sure you could set something up with them if youve got some cash, like maybe they will set up a time for you and you can come in, press out your skis, get edges and a base in an hour, the rest is up to you. i only say line because they are so small and might do something like this.

line and karhu dont have much to do with eachother except they are in the same factory and i think they might have the same bank accounts and what not. line itself is still owned by a bunch of young guys who are pretty much up for anything though and if you e-mailed jay i bet he might hook you up. jasonl@lineskis.com

i think it would be difficult to treat the core and cut it just right..that wouldn't be easy but i think it could be done

well if youve got a way to press em then all you really need is to buy the right materials and take your time. dont rush it. it took levinthal ten hours to make his first pair of skiis, these things take time. if i were you i would def go with wood, dont do a blend though so you eliminate laminating, just cut it out of a solid blank of maple or ash or somethin hard.

Here's another link .This tells you almost every thing you need to know about materials and where to get them. You can even buy presses from this place.It's in LA. ...........and I know it's snowboardshit but skis are made outta the same stuff.

the only problem with those presses is that they are for snowboards. the narrowest that really cheep one goes to is only 32 centimeters, not even cloe to a ski waist. mabye they could hook you up though with one for a ski.
