I got Anomaly a few days ago a just finished watching it for the third time. Over all the movie style was to be expected, if you like big mountain you will like this movie, if you just want to see rails and park, this probably isn't for you. I like all that is skiing and I also loved this movie. TGR did a really good on the segs for Marc Andre Belliveau, Doug Combs, and a last classic powder shoot at Jackson when riding in the tram. Belliveau's seg featured his own music and some fellow skiers commenting on his riding. It really showed that Marc was not only a great skier, but he is a really fun person to be around. Dougs seg closed the movie and also had some rider comments on how he changed the helped create todays big mountain riding. I would of liked to see more of Seth Morrison, Jeremy Nobis, Micah Black, and Jamie Pierre doing some skiing, however, Erik roner, Chris Collings, and Candide Thovex all had excellent stuff.
Man.. I cant believe what happened to Doug Coombs...
Here is what a TGR research guy said about the place in La Grave where he died...
"It is a series of three steep couloirs. The two first are angled at about 50 degrees and both end in cliffs. So to ski this run you have to exit the first couloir to your left then enter the second couloir. The first is hairy and extremely narrow so only one can ski it at a time and at the end you have ice building and some times hanging over the rock wall that is some 200 meters. The exit has to be done in time so that you are above the ice that builds under the snow. The second one is more or less exposed and a bit wider but still if you fall you will most likely die. And then finally you get to the exit couloir that is nice and opens up to some open slopes with moderate angles."
It was such a freak thing.. and Doug himself wouldnt have died if it werent that he was trying to save his friend who had fallen just previously. Such a bad situation for anyone to be in.. I mean, the weather was incredible that day and everything, and the av danger level was a 2 on the french scale.. which is pretty moderate to low.
Anyway.. it shouldnt have happened... very tragic...
TGR did a great tribute to him in this movie... I was very pleased, and I'm sure Doug would be proud.
I was at the nyc show, and the marc and doug scenes were well done. but i didnt like the cookie cutter concept where they parodied other ski movies, it comes off as uncreative and lazy to me. the big mountain stuff was great but the park stuff was fairly weak. there was a step up to step down set up almost indentical to the one in Shanghai 6, but the tricks were much weaker. a lot of the freestyle stuff seemed dated. if you like big mtn you will enjoy, but i think that TGR should stick to big mountain and not cut in decent trick stuff. for Candide's seg it was his invitational stuff, but i saw better shots on freeskier.com
I thought the parodied stuff was cool, but it sets the stage for next year, will they go back to doing that stuff they were just making fun or... or will the do something origional?
The movie was great except they tryed to change their image of "soul skiing" (dont even bring up team pup n suds) and tried to be like all the other movies. The skiing was insane triple back flip, 250 foot cliff, ian macintosh throwing down, but go back to the old feel tgr please.
