IN MY OPINION, the spin to win problem has arisen because of the judging criteria that is used in competitions, and human beings natural desire to win and earn money.
If it were up to me, judging would be based solely on these three points:
1. How big you go: How far you take your hit down the landing, how much pop you get etc.;
2. Most important of the three, INDIVIDUALITY. My biggest piss off in this sport atm is everyone immitating other peoples style. I guarantee that if we dressed all pro skiiers in the same clothes, couldnt see their faces, then watched them go off a jump, fuck all of the skiing community would be able to tell who the athlete was that just hit the jump. This is where individuality comes into play. We need to learn something from the most successful "action" sport, surfing. Given the same above scenario (except putting a surfer on a wave, not a jump obiviously), almost everyone with a slight interest in surfing could tell you who the surfer was on that particular wave. This is the result of individualism being harboured and encouraged within the surfing industry. There is so much indiviuality in that sport it's ridiculous, and there's no reason why skiing (mostly comp skiing anyway) can't be exactly the same. There are so many brilliant skiiers out there with great unique style, but when it comes to comps, they all just huck themselves off hits as hard as they can to try and win the judges praise (and the cash), and all their cab 10's turn out looking the same. So the second judging criteria should be individuality. And finally;
3. Closely tied in with individuality should be style, or what seems stylish. This is usually smooth, slow rotations, for example. This is obviously necessary to eliminate those whose indivuality looks plain shithouse e.g. jerky, unclean tricks
