How much do you care about the environment?

Not sure if anyone has been following this, but it makes me sick to my stomach. The Senate is close to allowing oil drilling in the Artic Refuge to decrease our dependance on foreign oil. Unfortunately this will only drop prices one cent/gallon at the pump 20 years from today.

I'm sure if you're reading this you love and respect the outdoors. Hopefully you can take a second and check out what the NRDC is all about and how you can help by simply signing a petition.

That is not true, the disasters are what happen to the wild life when we start putting up towers and fences and roads up in that area. we start to distroy that inviroment, which will cause many animals to change there migratory patterns which will screw up when they can eat, when they mate where thye are when it starts to snow and freez over all of these things can easily take out an intire heard and when I say heard I am talking about 10's of 1000's of animals. in the case of some animals that only live in that reagion it could take them out compleatly. and you can not say it is worthless untill you see it. you don't know how much you will miss it untill it is gone.

electricity is alot cheeperand renewable. hydrogen is not renewable, but we run out 8 minutes  after the sun dies. and at that point we have a much bigger problem on our hands.

BMW has had a hydrogen car for a few years. I think it is called the 760IH or something. And in Germany they have hydrogen filling stations. I know they have at least one at the Munich airport. I think its so funny here in the US when GM talks about hydrogen cars now a days like its something new that they came up with. BMW has cars on the road in Germany that regular citizens can buy and drive. Nobody in the US seems to like to talk about how much more ahead of us Germany is.

and on the topic, I really care about the environment. I do drive a gas sucking v8 grand cherokee, but I walk and bicycle where ever possible. Plus I ride a motorcycle a lot in the summer for transportation and fun. 40 to 50 mpg is pretty sweet. The glaciers and snowfields that are quickly disapperaring, really makes this issue evident. Its super scary to see before your eyes the world as we know it, changing.

come on, you dont need to be knocking michigan like that. Michigan is an awesome state to live in, if you live in the right place. Northern lower michigan is beautiful and the Upper Peninsula is fabulous. Really good mountain biking, rock-climbing and fly-fishing. The great lakes, especially Superior and Lake Michigan and just amazing.

Itsbackfliptime, what the hell, so the drilling doesn't effect you directly so you dont care about it. Very arrogant attitude to take. Thats what seems to be wrong with this country these days, our generation only cares about things that have a direct effect on their lives. For example: why the hell does nobody say anything about all the trash that is imported from Toronto into Michigan landfills everyday? You cross through Port Huron at night, all you see is trash truck after trash truck coming over from Canada. Why doesn't anybody stand up against this? In the '60s people would probably be laying on the bridge where the trucks cross to protest this.

where does electricity come from primarly? Coal is the answer, and coal is definity not a renewable resource, and burning coal for electricity pollutes the shit out of the environment. With hydrogen the only byproduct is H2O, water. Oh and hydrogen does not come from the sun, i dont think.

For the short version BMW takes water as the fuel, uses captured light from the sun to provide the energy to split the H2O into Hydrogen and Oxygen. The Hydrogen is used to power the vehicle and the byproduct is water. Seems like a pretty sick set-up. Thats where the car industry needs to go.

Oh and sorry for the badmouthing above, from reading I do see sunlight is used in these cars, to convert H20 to H and O.

totlly incorrect one of the biggest oil spills to date was last year, just cause the mainstram media doesn't cover it, doesn't mean that it didn't happen

and while this didn't happen in AK it further proves your point wrong that the new technologies have limited oil spills

i dont think people who disagree with drilling in alaska are as concerned about foreign oil useage as they are about oil usage in general.
there are ways around it, brazil is entirely self sufficient on ethanol fuel. many countries in the south pacific are becoming self sufficient by turning palm oil into biodiesel. everyone in europe takes trains instead of flys... did you folks know that by 2015 half the worlds greenhouse gas emmissions will be from air travel.
the point is not getting more oil... it is about using less of what we have.

problem with ethanol is the amount of corn that it takes to produce it. There isnt enough for animals and ethanol.

If it was up to me, all the danger factorys, cars everything that cause global warming would be shut down. And I would have put together a world wide ozon making factorys.
And cleaner power factorys.

I care more and more if we have the technology to go over at more efficient and green energy we should change to that as soon as possible and not thinking about costs. Well just spend more to it than we do now

but there is certainately enough room to produce plants like hemp which produce lots of oil and easily enough to supply the worl with bio-diesel. but sadly they dont even allow the growth of industrail hemp in the USA because they dont think people will be able to distinguish between that and hemp used for drug despite the fact they are distant cousins andf there is basically no THC in industrial hemp. and the USA is the only country with the economic infrastructure to create such a dramatic swing in the type of fuels we produce and use so it makes it difficult for every other country where you can produce world saving plants unable to do alot.

personal preferences: i think that the answer for now is being able to have a diversity of renewable energy forms. i know it would be hard to have several forms of fuel but it secures fuel longevity , and if we depend on any one fuel source then we're more susceptible to a fuel crises
