Anyone who knows their laptops

well im off to college and need a laptop.... to start off i DONT WANT AND APPLE i want something with windows preferably a dell... i was look at the new xps series. another line up i was looking at was sonys vaio fs.. soo all you newschoolers that have had a good experience with their laptop tell me about it... i cant spend over 2k

i have a dell inspiron 1100, its pretty old i'm getting a new one this year, i am however, going to get an HP becauuuseee, they are fucking boss. look into them on thier website or something, they are really nice now.

Vaio = Bad
HP = Worse
Compaq = Worst

I have had all three types in my house, all of met their doom. Get a mac. I don't care if you don't like OSX, i find it easier to use. Whatever. Get boot camp and use windows on a machine thats actually made properly.

Get a Dell or a Lenovo. Dell is best value for you money and Lenovo makes the best computers.

Get a business, computer straight from the manufacturer. Don't waist your time with something from best buy, they are garbage and filled up with so much junk software. Make sure you get XP Pro too.

If you guys all hate Windows so much then get a PC with Redhat or Ubuntu

Lenovo Thinkpad if you hate Apple and couldn't even stand using bootcamp to run Windows exclusively.

Dells are poorly built, both in fit and finish and components. Sony laptops are hit/miss, but I know a lot of people who love theirs. As for HP/Compaq and the rest of them, don't even bother. Remember: You'll be hauling this laptop around, so how much it weighs and how big it is actually matters.

www.dynamism.com wouldn't be a bad place to start looking for a windows based laptop. At least they understand that design matters. And yes, make sure to get XP Pro. It shouldn't matter, but it's been much more stable for me.

you want a mac. just get a macbook pro and run windows and every once and awhile go into os x until you realize how superior it is then just use os x.

i have this its sick, works really well. i put a sony dvd wrightable drive and thats pretty dank. id say deff get this comp its worth ur money. havent had a problem with it yet. and i also hate apple shit. windwos all the way

i would recommend a mac...i wish i had one.

i have a vaio or whatever everyone is ripping on. i got it for $50 and it's fucking bad ass, except the batteries.

my brother has a new dell inspiron and its is pimp. get a wide screen too, so you can watch dvds on it all swave like.

i don't really like the compaq's looks but im sure they're fine. pretty much get the widest screen you can.

you dont want apple? now i know your nuts. Get a macbook pro and then put bootcamp on it. Then you have your windows on a much better computer than a pc could ever be

dont get a dell. i used to work at a pc repair shop, and dells are by FAR the shittiest made systems out there. theres a decent processor (in some cases not) and maybe a decent video card (some cases not) all backed by cheap components designed to make them affordable. poor at best.
you get what you pay for in most cases, a cheap machine is going to be, for the most part, not a great computer. The only thing that keeps dell afloat, and i mean the only thing, is their customer service. people who dont know how to use a computer keep dell alive, because dell is user friendly.
get an emachines. thats a decent, rather cheaply priced machine. Toshiba is also a good choice, but if you realyl want a good laptop, get a macbook. im partial to windows, but i would never buy a windows laptop.

I agree. Look at some smaller manufacturers, like Alienware or something. Smaller companies usually have to have better customer service and components to stay alive against Dell and such. I'm using a Micron (now MPC) Transport X3000, and its pretty good.

A word of advice though: DONT GET AN ATI CARD. Mine has been having some driver issues, and ATI has the WORST customer service ever.
