Summer Urban Update
05/14/2006

Well this weekend the Highland Productions crew went to Oshawa Ontario (outside of Toronto) to hit some urban rails. The catch, we were to do it in exactly 24 hours, so sleep was not an option. We were on the road by 3pm Friday and well on our way home by 3pm Saturday. With the help of our trusty local guide Jake, we were in rail nirvana.
We hit a 23 stair down rail first at night with the generator and ramp. The ramp assembly got the attention of the janitor over the surveillance camera's but he was a nice guy and once we explained we drove 6 hours and would clean up, he left us. Mark Dandurand nailed it first or second try and Chirs German followed suit with some good slides. It was pretty steep, but Mark got a nice royale to switch and Chris a solid grease to the center of the landing pad. We finished by 1am, and it was around the cornor to the next. By this time everyone was getting pretty damn tired, and it took us forever to get all the stuff moved and set up.
We got the snow and started to set up the coolest rail ever. Its hard to explain, but its down, gap, flat, gap, down and its about 60 or 70 feet. We set it up over the next hour and by 3:30 am we pretty much had a nice set up done. Most of the guys were sleeping in the cars or somewhere near, but Mark, Caden and I got that thing set up. The moon was beauty and we watched the sun come up over the rail. It was around 5:30 am when the sun came up and the light was good to go. We got Chirs to wake up and run a lap round the football field while Mark got on task. By 6am he had cleaned to the last down, and soon after disaster stuck. He must have caught his foot on the last gap of the rail, and he nutted himself - to smack his face on rail - to FULL frontflip landing on pure concrete... Worst bail ive ever seen in my 17 years skiing.
Period. He got up, bleeding from his mouth and arms, but had a smile on his face. I was sure he lost his teeth and was going to have sever head truama, but I think the big guy was on his side this time (knock on wood). Chris, mean while was getting into the session and hit it a few more times, coming SO close to the end, when he too took some air off the rail and slammed into the stairs in the landing. He tore open his arms pretty well, but went back to the top to keep givn'r. They both kept sessioning hard, but i think the falls and lack of sleep had finally effected them to the extreme. By this time it was like 7am and the lacross teams were paying more attention to us then the game. We bounced and intend to go back and get it when we have more snow to work with.
We went to our last rail objective after a long mcdicks breakfast break, a downrail Plehouse went to in the fall with ZD and Charles. This one was prefect, but needed alot of snow due to the bad inrun. The hot blond principle kicked us out after much work, and the police rolled up to insure we left. They were good old country boys, and left quick. We then had the biggiest snowball fight ever and packed up for home. Im not going to lie to you, not sleeping all day was killing me, and the 6 hour drive home was brutal, but we made it. All in all a great trip, thanks to Max for driving, Caden (Senior Jump Building Analyst) and all the people in Oshawa that helped, most importantly Jake. We will return to get more down soon... Look for the footage in this years Highland film "To Legit To Quit" or in this years Vast Awards submission.
