The plan for my car over the summer

this is my car the way it is (except I have clear courners now!):

here is my photoshopped car with mods I want (see list below):

heres the list. hope I can make enough money for all this:
paint bumpers/gray remove on the side skirts
clear sides
clear tails
ASA JH8 18x8" with some semi decent tires that have high tread wear
front lip
rear lip

also, what you cant see:
cone filter
"ram air" using fog light remove
some sort of air box or something that my friend will help me build
maybe a chip - if the bones are there..
front strut bar


that pretty much sums up what I want to do to my car. what do you guys think, and what do you think of my photoshop work?

not bad, nice PS though, sell it and by a run down OLD toyota and paint it pink and have it say 'Pimp Panther' on the side. i was pukin in the street of steamboat and saw that drive by me and said, 'wow'

Don't do 18's if you're planning on using those wheels in the winter too. Other than that, you should have a pretty sweet car by the end of the summer!

unkless you get some decent sized tire under there, the ride is gonna be shit. When a car has big rims and not a lot of tire, you WILL feel every bump.

Don't do the paint/wheels/spoilers. Put all money into performance. Chip, cam, exhaust, airflow, suspension, brakes, tires.

I'd rather have a sleeper that hauls ass, then something that looks good but goes nowhere fast. Just my $.02.

mine arent that bad cuz you get used to actually feeling the road and not floating around like an idiot. I will never go back to stock tired or anything bigger than a 45. the feel you get from the road is amazing and you can better handlle the car.

ive got some 16" konig Zeige's that have Ultra High Performance Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 205/45 on them. used to have toyo's on them but they wore down and the side metal actaully busted through the edge on 1 tire. this is where they fall on the chart...

those fuckers cost about $125/tire but handle like none other.

why do you need upgraded breaks if you dont have the rim/tire to support it? the only reason you would upgrade breaks are because the wider the tire the more surface area u have touching the ground, thus you need more powerful breaks to stop the car. your suppose to be able to lock your tires, if you can not then you need better breaks.

rims/tires are definatly a performance upgrade. the better grip you get on the road will better boost ur acceleration and off the line time.

but yeah forget the paint and spoilers(added weight) until you get some performace mods and such.

The paint will be dirt cheep. Im going to get color matched spraycans for the bumpers and as for the sides, I can scrub off the gray and it is my car color under there. its strange, but every BMW e36 is like this.

Rear clear tail lights are about $70 off ebay.

side clears are about $30.

The trunk lip is like $40 off ebay

The front lip is like $70 off ebay

getting nice wide and big wheels will help porformance a shit-ton.

I like my car too look nice. I really dont need it to be much faster, although it can't hurt, but if anything it will just get me in trouble with the law..

just something you might want to think about when putting on larger rims. your car wont sit like it does in the PS pic. its gonna get raised a little because of the larger wheels. might want to think about some lowering springs. and with new springs i would recommend new shocks/struts(your factory ones will wear out quicker with lower springs) and a set of caster camber plates(if your dropping more than 1" youll likely need them for proper alignment).

not at all true... see my stock are 14", my rims 16", with the 205/45 it gives me the exact same dimentions as the 14" with shitty big tires. i still get the same speedometer reading as before and the same speed reading.

thats another thing you have to research is what happends to ur speedometer readings and such.

also, what size are your stock wheels on the bmw? you might not even be able to get a good fit with 18" rims and tires.

I have talked to and seen a lot of people with the same car as I have who have used towerpaint.com as long as you do all the prep work/sanding/primer (perhaups)/whatever else you need to do, it can look the same as with a paint gun.

Upgraded brakes was assuming he'd do the engine mods first. Upgradin it is not as important until your car has increased in horsepower by a considerable amount. But once it does, consider it a protection on your investment.

I am not sure what you mean about rim/tire to support it. If you put on better brakes (4 pot calipers, vented/cross-drilled rotors, stainless lines, better cylinders, good fluid) you will have immediately better braking, regardless of wheel/tire upgrades. Now, better tires will definitely help braking performance. And, bigger rims will alow you to put on a bigger rotor/caliper, but other than that the rim has little to do with braking unless you're talking the weight or the alloy used to cast it. Maybe were saying the same thing.

Just my opinion, based on SCCA experience.

Go with performance upgrades first, so you spend your money on the important things. Plus, if you have more of a sleeper car, it will be that much sicker.

It's a BMW, so you can really go either way with regard to modification. They look pretty damn good to begin with, so it's always a good idea to add some of your own touches just to make it unique. As far as performance goes, BMW does quite well, but obviously you can never have enough. Looks like your budget isn't super high so the plan that you have now looks pretty good for me.
And for the brakes: you guys that were saying you have to upgrade the wheels first are wrong. Most (nearly all) cars these days come with anti-lock brakes, so locking up your car because the brakes are too powerful is out of the question. By getting stronger brakes you will reduce brake fade at higher speed, get better pedal feel, and also have a larger "bling" factor for those who care about that sort of thing.

yeah i know you can get it close with a smaller tire size. my car originally had 16's and the previous owner put on 17's and with a 245/45 tire its nearly the same. he said hes going from a 16 to an 18. so yes he wont know until he gets them on there but i dont think they will be tucking like they are in the PS pic. just trying to give him something to think about if he ends up needing it. i forgot about the recalibration part though if the new wheels rims do end up being larger than the stock set up.

oh yeah i was basically saying that a simple test is to slam on the breaks. if you can lock them up its usually a good enough break, but u could always go better. and then there are such things are too much power in ur breaks. dont wnat that. just touch them and the tires lock. so unless he gets mass more power he wont need the new breaks. but then if he gets some fatty rims with swet tires, the breaks might not be strong enough to lock up. then yes you would be needing a better break system.
