While they could potentially be abused, smilies would let people know when others are joking around and prevent some of the hating.

True, but this can be obtained through characterized smiles like " :D " and " ;) "
just as well.

I really do like the simplicity at times. It would be fucking chaos with smiles enabled with users allowed to use them at will.
