So I was up at Big Mountain this weekend for a big air competition. 6 hour drive from where I live, missing out on 34 new inches at bridger just so I can go jump. I was reluctant to go, but I did, hoping to do well at the competition. I get there and the jump is sick. It's wide and boosts you really high. When I hit it, I was even happier. It launched you about 50-60 feet, and the landing had room for double that easily. Well, shit just wasn't going my way that day. I kept losing sight of my landing or losing concentration or something that made me eat hard shit all through warmups. Comp comes and first round I throw a cork 9, wash out in the bottom and then threw a cork 7. In the second round I decided to step it up and go for the 10, it was easily big enough. So I go off the lip and set way late. I see the landing getting closer and I have barely even gotten the 7 around. I land with my skis completely perpandicular to the steep ass jump hill. I instantly feel my spine compact and I fucking bounce down to the bottom. I could barely move because I was in so much pain, and I had to withdraw from the comp. Go down to the ski patrol shack and am told I most likely have a broken back. So then I get put in the most uncomfortable backboard and neckbrace, and they load me into an ambulance for a nice 40 min ride to the nearest hospital with advanced X ray. After 2 hours of being in a fucking tight ass neck brace, I rip it off, and instantly feel the wrath of the nurse. I got my ass chewed out hardcore, which just made the situation shittier. After getting the X rays back, I find out that my back isn't broken. The doctor is a complete dumbass and really can't come up with a reason as to why I can barely stand. So now here I sit, on a perfectly good sunday, missing out on some good pow and park. It sucks. Moral: Don't underrotate on big jumps.
yeah i've been in those neck braces and they hurt like fuuuuck. the feeling in the back of your head where it rests on the cold hard metal is just like murder.
